I have an old Cannondale M900 Hardtail which I love. However it creaks when I’m going uphill and the frame sounds as if its about to fall apart at any moment. I pretty sure it's not coming from the components as I've tried ching most things.

I think its perhaps coming from the inserts at the seatpost and/or the bottom bracket that are creaking. Does anyone know if you can get these replaced?

  • What do you mean by inserts? You could remove seat and pedal uphill to see if creaking goes- or more easily see if you can rock the crank arms by pushing and pulling the crank arm(either) towards the frame and away again, a worn bottom bracket should flex when you do this, when new they don't. Must admit never tried to replace a BB, but Park Tools guide say that it is sometimes necessary to 'face' the frame where the BB sits, this is to ensure a perfect parallel fit for the BB- they make it sound a nightmare to be fair and don't recommend doing it yourself, easy to buy though- Chain Reaction Cycles and Merlin are ace for parts, worth asking a bike shop what they charge for fitting- if you supply parts or if they can do free fitting if you buy there (may end up costing about the same). Good riding!
