Movement in cassette

Hi, I noticed today that when I touch the cassette whilst cleaning it, each gear ring moves back and forth, the bigger rings move more than the smaller ones, maybe 1/8 of an inch either way, are they supposed to move, or is it wear?
When I say they move, it's side to side movement as in when you are looking at the cassette side on, so the rings will move backwards and forwards by 1/8 or so.

sounds like the pins that hold the cassette together are lose and also the locking ring may also be lose.
cassette off and have a look. some have bolts rather than pins that can be tightened. the fact it is lose is not a problem other than the pins can come out and stick in the wheel causing problems. but they do not have to be in the cassette as they are only really needed to keep it all together and the cogs in the correct place when not fitted."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Hi Nick, cheers, I don't have any tools to do anything like that myself, I wouldn't have a clue what to do anyway.nicklouse wrote:The fact it is lose is not a problem other than the pins can come out and stick in the wheel causing problems.
Doesn't actually sound too serious then, and shouldn't prevent me from riding it for another couple of months as it is before I get my new bike?
Now all I have to do is get Halfords to fit a new spoke to replace a snapped one, I wasn't going to bother getting it done, but I just phoned them and they said it's about 30 pence for a spoke and £10.99 to fit it, except they can't do it until at least Tuesday, as it's a bank holiday on Monday, bugger, first I had heard of it.0 -
is the spoke on the rear? and on the drive side? then they will have to remove the cassette anyway."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
