  • the problems i've had with pre-loading is that in my opinion you need to pre-load then tighten the pinch bolts to see if you've taken the play out... which is where people are going wrong. To take the play out without doing up the pinch bolts you need to massively over pre-load them.

That's just my theory, it's probably complete balls.

Nice theory, but if you look at what's happening when you do up the pinch bolts, they're not moving the crank arm so I can't see any way the tension will increase as you do them up - same as an aheadset stem doesn't mess the tension up when you do up the pinch bolts.
Also, spinning the cranks with the chain off gives you a good idea of whether they're correct or not if you have any doubts.

^^^ i've never had my HTII cranks spinning freely, i expect them to be like a headset, but always find the cranks wobble and i'm now thinking it's the cranks rather than the bearing if you know what i'm saying!
  • ^^fair point.
I actually went for a hope replacement BB for the saints, and hopefully it will be a long long time before I can tell you how long it lasted

Yeh, I reckon for anything above mid range kit, there should be no need for any reviews, as it should all last forever..!

Think you've got a good chance with the Hope's though.

Whoa, the cranks really shouldn't wobble.
Even without the pinch-botls done up, the driveside crank shouldn;t move, and with the pinch bolt done up, there is no way for the non-drive side crank to wobble.
You must have a set of borked bearings or something.

I run deore HT2 cranks on both my HT and FS - the FS got them because I liked them so much on my HT (and it was part of a groupset so no choice!).

No issues with my HT set - fit and forgot in April.

That said my old ISIS Northshore DH cranks were fine for a season in the alps plus loads before that - only gave out at the end of a muddy crank submerged ride. kept the cranks and changed the BB then sold the bike.
    Closet jockey wheel pimp whore.

Have you pushed the axle all the way through ride_whenever? Sometimes needs a good bash.
