Back axle replacement

OK - stupid questions department (of which this is bound to be the first of many)
How easy is it to replace a solid back axle with a QR one?
If this is possible, not simple and I can talk the LBS into doing it, any idea of the likely costs?
Would I be better forgetting it (given that the value of the bike is less than the cost of a new back wheel)?
Thanks in anticipation

About a tenner for the axle and a tenner to install it - assuming the old axle is a standard threaded design and doesn't feature any special machining. Obviously you'll need a QR as well.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0
