Problem with my gears

Last night I noticed that my gears are playing up. When I change up 1 gear it wasn't always changing. Then when I tried to change up to the next gear it would jump on 2 gears. I also couldn't get it to go into the first gear.
Also, when I thought that it had changed gear, I'd peddling harder and it would then fall into the gear I that I thought it was in.
Could it be that the chain is a bit dry and just needs oiling perhaps? Or could it be more serious than that?
I don't change gear hardly ever when riding on the street, I'm going to Swinley Forest tomorrow and will be using the gears loads.
Cheers.

sounds like poor cable tension and/or dirty cables."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

loosen the cable on the rear, pedal it till it falls to bottom cog (in a stand of somesort) pull cable through and retighten, use the barrel adjusters to fine tune the shifts0

Yes, it's probably cable tension. You'll need to tune the tension using the twistable adjuster located on the end of the cable housing where it attaches to the mech body. If you've not done it before, this takes practice, but you should be aiming for precise, instantaneous shifts with almost no noise. Remember: small turns on the adjuster makes big changes to the shift quality.
Alternatively, you may have a bent hanger (where the mech attaches to the frame), which is probably a bike shop job. (That's the second gear adjustment/bent hanger contribution I've made today...) http://www.bikeradar.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=125827650 -
Cheers guys, I shall have a fiddle tonight. Hopefully I can sort it this evening.0
