Shimano SPD sizing question

I fancy giving clipless a try. Have ordered some pedals off eBay, now I need some shoes. I'm UK size 12, and having done some detective work on Shimano sizing it seems that conventional wisdom says go up one size as they're somewhat tight.
However is that go up one UK size, or one EU size. Size 12 is EU size 47.
Wiggle says I should get a 48, however would you play safe and go for a 49 ?
Spanner in the works is that some shoes eg MT41 are max size 48, whereas M075 does a 49.
I know you'll all say try 'em on first. However it's bad enough buying size 12's in a regular shoe shop, so I'm not holding out much hope of a bike shop having 48/49's in stock.
Cheers all.

At a complete and utter guess I would reckon go with the 48. I generally find Wiggle's sizing suggestions to be quite accurate.
I'm either 44 or 45 in most normal shoes and take a 45 in Specialized shoes and 45-46 in Shimano sandals (they come in double sizes.) 46.5 in Asics runners.
Bear in mind that cycling shoes are meant to be tight.
Wiggle will swap/refund you anyway if they don't fit.0 -

I'm gonna disagree on this one. I prefer Spesh shoes due to my wide feet and alwyas go up a size - mainly becuase allowing some space in the toe box will keep you warm in the winter. As long as the shoe is snug everywhere else and particularly in the heel cup then having one size up has caused me no probs. I would suggest trying some shoes on in a shop first though - even if you don't buy, but diff shoes suit diff feet better. Some makes (eg Sidi) even do different fittings for wide feet (side mega).- 2023 Vielo V+1

Totally agree with Jash, I bought some shimano shoes online in what I thought was my size, and they were too small.
Pop to your LBS and try some on. Ring around... if it's any consolation my brother is a size 49 shoe, and he managed to find some, although he had to get them from the states.
In the shimano stealth clippy sandals, go one size up.0
