a few weeks ago i picked up a 03 rocky mountain switch
its as new, even has the nobbles on the original tyres!
the only problem with it is the hayes brakes. the lever is not spongey, but it will not pull me to a standstill. will never lock the rear wheel. id say dangerous!
is there anything i can do, short of replacing them, to get them working? pads look ok, not spongey so whats up?

If its still really that new could the pads not have bedded in yet? You could try to see if it improves any after 50-100 brakings.0

sounds like in the years it has been stood around the pads and rotors have been contaminated. clean the rotors with isopropanol alcohol and replace the pads."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
