My stem is NOS and unmarked I have carefully fitted it and see theres a small gap at the top of the h/s - I am scared to tighten it up and go for a ride it if its going to rock and creak because then the stem will become marked.

Does anyone have any experience of whether I will get away with it pls?

Thanks

  • I have used the Mavic quill stems and I still have a Vitus 979, but I can't recall using the two together.I probably used the Mavic stems in otherBritish and Dutch steel frames with no problem.

The Vitus aluminium fork has a steel column .

I've just remembered, I did have a Mavic stem on the Vitus at one stage, because I remember the handlebar clamp breaking so I had to ride home with one hand gripping the stem as tight as possible!

As I recall ,Sean Kelly rode a Vitus ,possibly with Mavic equipment.

Istill have a few Mavic bits which I was going to sell to a Scottish gentleman who didn't want to pay for postage ,so they're still in a box!!

    Rich.

french and english do not mix - get the right size

if you really want it to fit you could use the old pro trick (coke cans)

Thanks Gundersen - cutting out a shim from a can and ramming it in - sounds crude but also sounds like it would work? Is this a viable long term solution or just a bodge?
