Hi all. Could do with some advice.
I'm looking to upgrade the rear mech and cassette on my 2007 Giant XTC 4.5 to a Shimano XT Rear Derailleur and XT Cassette 9 Speed, which will require a Super Narrow 9-speed HG chain which I'm all fine with.

My query is will the new XT set up require an XT chainset also? As am I right in thinking their could be some problems with the new narrower XT cassette and chain if I was to leave the current TruVativ ISOFlow chainset on?

Any advice would be appreciated, cheers.

Yes its a nine speed still on the standard kit:

Rear Mech - Shimano Deore LX
    Front Mech - Shimano Deore
Shifters - Shimano Deore 27 speed RapidFire Plus
    Chain - Shimano HG73
    Chainset - TruVativ ISOFlow 22/32/44
    Cassette - SRAM PG950 11-34 (is that a problem?)

Also am I right in thinking that the triple chainset will require the Super Long Cage Shimano XT Rear Derailleur?

well as it is a 9sp shimano set up you have no issues. (cassettes dont matter).

    long cage rear mech needed.

What about if I was to just upgrade to XT cassette and chain, would they be compatible with the Deore LX rear mech?

Just one more question. Upgrading to a 9 speed XT cassette requires a super narrow HG chain yes? Would a SRAM PC951 9 Speed Chain be ok to use with the XT cassette?
    Cheers

no it does not need you to change anything. as you are already running 9spd.

but yes a sram 9sped chain works.

One other thing to note, the cassettes usually come in 11-32 or 11-34. I didnt realise this when I upgraded my chainset with a Deore cassette at the back. The XT chainset was obviously slightly different ratio from my old truvativ one, and this made my gearing feel slightly longer, i.e. I couldnt get my gearing as low as I could previously. I then changed my cassette to an 11-32, and it felt better again. Just a thought to mention....
