Replacing V brakes - tension

Hi y'all,
I recently did a strip, clean and linseed oil on my frame, but when I put it all back together I had an issue with the V brakes. Without changing anything on the setup I found that the brakes no longer spring back and feel somewhat spongey. I think it's something to do with the spring - but can't figure it out at all.
For the moment I have bodged it by setting the brakes up in the wrong hole on the frame. Anyone know what I need to do to fix it properly?

It's been a while since I played with v-brakes. Is the spring located properly in the hole on the bosses? Some older frames have more than one hole, enabling different tensions to be set.

The "proper" hole on the bosses is the middle one. I had to use the top one to get decent spring-back. Not sure why you shouldn't do this thought.
