I have seen lots of bikes with the freehub protector removed. I think it looks a lot better without, so I took mine off. Will this make any diiference to the freehub's lifespan?

no, it is so they don't have to set up the mech's properly. It is to stop your chain going off the top of your cassette and mangling spokes, but this cannot happen if you set up the mech properly.
Hence spoke protector is superfluous.0 -
It can even be dangerous, mine broke up and jammed my rear wheel mid ride :shock:It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.
I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result0 -
For washing? The muck off kit has some cassette cleaning brushes0

That happened to me at Brenin... plastic protector shattered and jammed the freehub
No I don't have a protector0 -
did you take the casette off to get to it, or can you get to break/cut it out?' From the sharks in the penthouse,

I always cut them out using a pair of pliers/cutters. :twisted:0

thanks synchronicity, mine is coming off tomorrow!' From the sharks in the penthouse,

I cut mine off very carefully to avoid damaging the spokes, with a small hacksaw blade and pliers. There's quite a lot of play once you break off the three or four clips that hold it in place.0

I had to rip mine off with a pair of pliers trailsideIt's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

Does anyone know where to get those multi-coloured bottle-brush type jobbies which wrapped around your hubs and kept them clean and free of gunge? 8)
I haven't seen those in years.....!

I think I'd rather have dirty hubs than that thing on my rear wheel. It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

That's it. I'm off to the pub to pick up some beer keg tops to stick in my spokes. And then I'll cut a coke bottle in half and wegde it against my back tire. All the other kids will be WELL jealous0
