New (08MY) Deore Rear Mech' with a 7spd cassette?

I'm giving the old Cinder Cone (1991) a bit of TLC, and have already replaced wheels, hubs, tyres, brakes, stem, saddle and seatpost.

The last major item to sort is the RD - still the original Suntour XC Ltd item @ 17 yrs old, and perhaps not surprisingly, with a fair amount of sideways movement when you grab the bottom of the cage. The drive and indexing quality has been deteriorating for a while now, and since the cassette is only lightly worn as is the chain, I put my setting up / adjustment woes down to the worn RD. This seems to be confirmed when I gently push the bottom of the cage (effectively removing the play) to its correct vertical position while turning the cranks and the noises stop!

So, question is, if I replace the current Suntour XC Ltd thumbies with a pair of Deore XT thumbies I have lying around (should work better with the shimano cassette - indexing is similar but not identical so I've been told), will a new Deore rear mech (LX or XT) that's obviously designed for 9spd bikes, work OK with my Shimano HG 7spd cassette / chain and deore xt thumbies?

Thanks

well if as you say you have indexing issues then you may want to check the shifters first as the mech has nothing to do with the indexing. Other than just following the movement of the shifter.

    Ok read further.

A mech is dumb and only does what it is told. shimano XT 7speed shifters will work with any shimano mechs fine.

the suntour one may also work if the cable pull is the same as shimano.

thanks for that - does anybody know if the cable pull / actuation ratio on Suntour XC Ltd is the same as current Shimano?

You say XT thumbies will work with any Shimano rear mech fine, so in effect they're not 9/8/7 speed specific, i.e. they'll move only as far as they have to / are set up to with the H/L adjustment?

As a matter of interest, if I change to an 8spd cassette (apparently XT thumbies had a hidden 8th click???), will it fit on the Deore LX Parallax hub I have at present, or is the total width of the casette / sprockets wider because it has one more cog?

    Cheers

the mech is dumb and only does what it is told. the jockey wheels can be of differing widths and some people can tell the difference.

when shimano brought out the SIS the amount of cable pull has kept the same.

no you can not fit a 8spd cassette it is wider. but the chain is the same.
