Roadie looking for new mountain bike

Hi Guys
I'm more usually to be found on a road bike but my old mountain bike has had it and I'm looking for a replacement. I don't want to spend a fortune, perhaps upto around £300, and only need something that I can use over the woods with my youngster. I might also use it to blast through the mud during those dark winter months.
I'm buying it through the cycle to work scheme so am limited to a local (London Bridge) bike shop, although they say they should be able to source most makes for me.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

hi Harry,
to me, these look like good candidates, as well as the ones mentioned in the linky above:

if you have a look on Paulscycles, or Winstanleys, you'll find a lot of bikes from last year, or the year before at substantial reductions.
Good luck with your purchase.
