SRAM cassettes
A quickie for someone....
Firstly are SRAM cassettes Shimano fit ?
Secondly are the SRAM range of road Cassettes better than the Shimano alternatives :?:
I was considering the following 2 options.....
Shimano Ultegra 6500 9 speed Cassette 11-21
SRAM PG970 9 speed Cassette 11-21
:? :?:
TIA for any replies

First - yes, same fit.
Second - not better, about the same with a shiny chrome finish. He is not the messiah, he is a very naughty boy !!0 -
wot he said ^^
in the mtb world, some reckon the Shimano cassettes last longer but I couldn't confirm this - too many variables influencing wear rates.
some SRAMs have a nice red spider though.....Facts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0 -
Yes they are Shimano fit BUT be aware that some Shimano freehubs use taller splines which are not compatible with SRAM cassettes e.g. the Ultegra 6600 wheelset IIRC.0

II've ultegra 9 speed on one bike and SRAM 10 speed on the other. Going by figures on the web I think SRAM cassettes are a few grams lighter than the equivalent ultegra. Also have to say I prefer the finish on the SRAM, it comes out a bit shinier after a clean. On the downside they usually cost a few pounds more although chainreactioncycles has some on sale at the moment.0

These are the Shimano 10sp-only alu hubs, only a few Ultegra and DA models which are identified as '10sp only'.
I guess they have the taller splines because they're alu and the 10sp Shimano cassettes have deeper spline-grooves to accommodate them than the Shimano 8sp and 9sp which are the same spline pattern.
Shimano 10sp steel hubs or 8/9/10sp hubs are fine with either.
I've never used SRAM road cassettes, but their MTB ones are considerably lighter than the equivalently-priced Shimano ones and appear better finished.0 -
Thanks again for some extra input…
The reason I ask is that I had seen these 2 cassettes at CRC, based on the RRP I just assumed that the SRAM one would be better value for money…? I hadn’t even considered the weights

the SRAM one doesn't look like it has a spider though, which may be relevant if you run a alu freehub.
the 12-23 is 185g according to the SRAM website
http://www.sram.com/en/srammountain/cas ... /pg970.php
not sure what the Ultegra weighsFacts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0 -
210g for 12-23, according to Ribble.
http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/productde ... HIMCASS800
(also £29.99 or £26-odd if you spend >£50, but plus p&p)
So not much in it in terms of either weight or price.0 -
Cheers lads for the links
