My chain is now worn! Between 0.75 and 1.0 (according to park tools measure)
Do i need to replace with the same chain or same brand or is it ok to switch?
Its a SRAM PC951.
Also the lbs told me it will mean a new rear cassette! is this the case?
I understand it might mean a new cassette but how will i tell if i change the chain first?
Thanks in advance, have not been going a year so need some help with the tech stuff!!!!

There is no fixed rule on changing the cassette at the same time - depends how it has worn, and this varies. You could take a careful look at it and decide (see Sheldon Brown's page), or fit the new chain and ride. if it slips and jumps sop riding, and get a new cassette. Same applies to chainrings.
All you need to make sure is that the chain is the right speed and length. PC951 and 971 are great value, and easier to fit and maintain than Shimano.0 -
you can swap brands of chain no problem! my lbs highly recommend KMC chains over Sram! i have to say, very impressed with mine!
as above on the cassette, if its an old one then go for a replacement,Timmo.

second for kmc, get the best one you can afford but even the cheap ones are very good and seem to last for ages.0

I had a KMC chain put on. Look real nice and runs well smooth. I was going for a SRAM but my LBS who had stocked SRAM chains for many years said that they were shite this year and had stopped stocking them for the KMC. Real nice with the master link as well.0

Bugger SRAM and shimano chains, they're both crap. get KMC or similar.0
