As above. have been trying to find the answer and i am confused. Have read the sram link for compatibility and whilst this is basically saying it should not work. i have read other threads on other websites that have confirmed you can use sram shifters with xt rear mech.

I think that its impossible to use shimano shifters with xram rear mech due the ratio differences but would it be possible to use the Shimano XT Rear Derailleur M771 with an sram x-5 shifter.

Thanks anyone for helping me clear this up before i buy.

Reason i am asking is that i have broken my x-9 rear mech and just dont fancy buying another one. WOuld rather go for xt if possible but dont want to have to replace transmission completely. I have an XT front mech with sram x-5 shifter and that works fine.

will not work. for that shifter you need a SRAM rear mech.

If the SRAM shifter has a name eg Rocket, Attack etc it will work with a Shimano rear mech. If it has a number eg X5, X0 etc it will only work with SRAM rear mechs.

Looking forward to trying the rapid rise... should be fun. Sounds like a good idea imho.

Its personal preference which way you want to go

SRAM did do attack SX Shifters which were 1:2 (shimano compatible) but i couldnt get used to the push up push down shifting from Sram. much prefere Shimanos fire shifters

Ive always believed that unless your going to spend a pretty penny stick with shimano, find it shifts smoother and its generally cheaper and easier to get

my 2ps worth there, hope it helps :)
