Shimano 105 Gear shifters

Hi,
I have recently bought a new bike and was wondering how the left & right gear shifters work? I know this probably sounds ludicrous but I cannot seem to operate them correctly!

moving the brake lever innwards should move the chain up the cog (to a larger one). pressing the inner black lever in only should move the chain to a smaller cog.

the indexing set up can mean that moving the brake or lever moves more than one gear cog.
