Cheap carbon cages on ebay - UPDATE

I came across this seller in my search for bottle cages and he's selling 2 carbon ones for less than £ 20 delivered.

Now I'm a firm believer in 'you get what you pay for' but he has some good feedback from them.

Anyway I bit the bullet and ordered a couple. If they're cack then it's only £20 down the pan and will go on my old bike.

I'll report back when I get them.....

I've got these bottle cages, I thought for the money can't go wrong. I got them from this seller for $13.99 (US $ not UK £) with free P&P!

Yes for the money thought they are good value, not badly made and very light. Thinking of getting some for my winter bike!

Just fitted these to my bike. I am pleased with them - they are very light and come with screws and washers to attach.

I've not taken them out with full bottles in them but they seem to grip the bottles well so they'll be staying on my bike.

I think considering their price they are very good value....

Are they lighter than the Tacx Tao Cage tho ? Or do they just look nice ?

I see the sellers location is China.

How long did the cages take to arrive from the point where you made payment?.

Not keen on waiting 17 days ( as the advert suggests may be the case ). 8)

Just curious, but has anyone ever bought something claiming to be carbon fiber
but was only a plastic look alike. Not that it really matters for water bottle cages,
but like I said just curious. And how do you know it's carbon fiber??? Especially
coming from an e-bay address in China?? And isn't China famous for knockoff
    look alikes and other pirating?

I dunno, I think it would be pretty obvious if its carbon fibre or not. All you would need to do is look at the back/rear ( unfinished ) side of the cages and you would be able to tell from the rough "weave" that it was indeed, CF.

Also, with most genuine carbon fibre components, when held in front of a very bright light ( or the sun ) you can see light transfering through certain parts of the weave as well , in the form of tiny pinholes ( at least this is true with any CF parts I've bought for my motorcycle ).

I've took the plunge with quite a few bits and bobs on eBay that originate in China and to be honest, most of them have been exactly as described and fitted the bill perfectly.

Reason I'm asking about delivery times is that the last thing I bought on eBay that came from China, was an HID headlight kit for my RSV Mille and the seller stated it would be "up to" 21 days delivery.

It was...!!! 21 days later it finally arrived!!!

Other stuff has came within 4 or 5 days, so will be interesting to see how long these took to arrive for Venster. 8)

Do they function well as bottle cages though ? Its all very well having a shiny cage, but if it cracks easily or doesnt hold onto a bottle over a bumpy road, then they're not worth having. They need to be functional.

Mine took about 10 days, that included the BH Monday...

As I said I've not used them on the road yet, but let you know how they get on.

As for being plastic. I don't know...they are VERY light, much lighter than the Bontrager plastic ones I took off. My first impression when I saw them wasn't 'oh bu**er, they're not CF, they're plastic'. They look good on my bike, but as it's been mentioned, if they dont hold full bottles well enough then they might as well be useless.....we shall see....

    Thanks for the feedback.

Think I'll order a set and see how they do.

At that price even if they are rubbish, it's worth taking the risk.

Be sure and post back how you get on with them on the road m8. :)

I still use the "old" metal style. Possibly because I'm "old" but mostly because weight is not
a problem and I like the idea that you can bend them a bit if they are holding too tight or too loose. And they only cost 5 dollars or so. And they come in pretty colors.

Metal is good for that. I have the Tacx plastic ones on. They must be as light as carbon, and I've not lost a bottle yet. And they kinda match my bike.

Carbon fibre reinforced polymer is easy to distinguish as it far far stiffer than any simple polymer component. It's also harder, and will scratch rather than deform (if you know what I mean) if you take a key or screwdriver to it.

    Hi Venster,

which cages did you go for?

He's got 2 different types on there:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/D1-Brand-New-Bicycle-Full-Carbon-Fiber-Water-Cage-20g_W0QQitemZ260278898940QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item260278898940&_trkparms=72%3A984%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14

They seem to be £9.24 each.

And then there are these ones:

    11-1.jpg
Which are only £13.59 for a pair delivered.

As your link was just to the general shop, wasn't sure which ones you went for?

    I'm assuming the first ones??

    Hello again,

sorry to bring this one back, but I imagine Venster hasn't seen this or the PM I sent last week - I know they are not always obvious.

So I'm hoping he might see the thread re-surface, and reply :D

  • After reading this thread I decided to purchase two of these bottle cages. They arrived yesterday , I ordered mine on the 18th Aug. I am very impressed with the quality of these cages, they are very light and have a nice finish to them. I went out for a bike ride earlier and the cages held my water bottles no problem. At £13 for two of them post free its a absolute bargain if you dont mind waiting for them.

    Hi Venster,

thanks for the pic, those ones you show do look very nice indeed, but as you say, he hasn't got any listed right now, maybe he's just out of stock for a bit.... :?

I just checked the messages, and it claims to be in the sentbox, so maybe it's just playing silly buggers!

    Cheers
