Cambrian Trail for beginner

Hi,
I'm a beginner to MTB'ing and have agreed to ride the Cambrian Trail in four days at the end of September. I have a hardtail MTB with Tioga XC 1.9 on front and Ritchie ZMax 2.1 on the back. As we'll be doing a variation on the 'official' route which will be about 50% tarmac and 50% trail, I wonder if there are better tyres which will make riding on the tarmac sections easier, without making the off-road bits dangerous! I find that the tyres I have are hard going on tarmac (for obvious reasons). I was looking at the Schwalbe Marathon Cross tyres, but am worried that they'll be a disaster on the off-road bits, particularly if it's wet.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks.

I've just got some Specialized Crossroads Armadillo Elite for mixed riding....these are puncture resistant as well but not cheap at £25 each.
I'll let you know how i get on with them, i have Tioga XC 2.1 at the moment.Cheers, Stu0 -
I saw these at the local bike shop, although I was initially confused at the different variations. It would be brilliant if you could report back on their performance. Cheers.0
