due to the huge increase in the value of scrap metal ( my bike must be worth a fortune ! ), road gulley gratings are being targetted by thieves. I've noticed a few missing on some roads just outside Newcastle. If you weren't concentrating 100% and rode into one there would be a heck of a mess

anyone else noticed this ?

It's happening here in West Yorkshire too. Especially dodgy on long fast downhills !
  • Most gulleys/covers that I've seen only extend into the road by about a foot so are using a part of the road that I won't use anyway. I would have thought that missing gulley covers present a greater danger to pedestrians than cyclists

I tend to agree with you about riding position. However, I have noticed this type of theft in my area and it concerns me when riding on the inside of a group as one can get pushed into the nearside of the road on occasions.

Sounds as though you need to educate some members of the group  Don't be forced into a situation or road space where you've no room to manoeuvre - hold your line mate  On the rare occasion that I've come upon missing covers contacting the LA has got replacements fitted very quickly.

I knew someone would reply with that, obviously no-one would cycle over them on purpose, but you could easly get squeezed there by passing traffic

If you know of a pedestrians forum, I'll post it on there
