Sorry, but I think it is a pretty pointless petition.

They start the article saying that the British bike industry isn't what it was, then says we should stop import charges on - well imports!

So does this mean we should hammer the final nail in the coffin of the British bike industry, just so we can get cheaper bikes from Taiwan?

I somehow don't consider that this import duty has any influence on whether people take up cycling.

IMO the only thing that this would do is flood the market (even more) with sub £100 heaps of metal and give the Government a reason to find another way of taxing us.

I am incredibly surprised that such an influencial magazine as Cycling Weekly is giving this any positive press.

i dont know every one is saying that on-one ( a great yorkshire company) make great bikes (made in the far east) now if we could get 14% off the price of a ti 456 that would put a smile on my face. Not all bikes made in the far east are cheap and nasty. same as not all bikes make in the eu are fantastic.

As the goverment its trying to boost people in to getting fitter they do need to look in to removing tax from sports equipment and then putting it on to more unhealthy things like cream cakes or ready meals. Or to cut costs

if its true that sheriff has it bang on and should cover the costs of removing import tax on bikes if we rolled that out to all of our prisons.

British bike industry? Really the only bikes built in the UK now are Custom Steel - they are expensive anyway, and more cheap Alu or CFRP bikes coming into the country is unlikely to affect the sales of custom steel bikes as they have their niche.
