Creaking coming from the cranks...

I've had a bike now for about 18 months and covered around 2000 miles in it. Its never made much of a noise but just recently its started creaking from the cranks or that area, sounds like its coming from the right hand side and its on every turn of the cranks.

I'm no good at all at bike DIY and already know my local bike shop can't accept any more work for at least 3 weeks... and I'm starting a tour of Scotland on 6th September.

The bike seems to be functioning fine. I always keep the chain well oiled but other than that I don't do much to it. The bike was last serviced probably about 1500 miles ago.

Do noises mean things are going to start snapping left right and centre or is it nothing to worry about?

  • Best to check if the bolt securing the crank to the bottom bracket axle is tight. If left, then this could cause the soft alloy of the crank to distort and then it would need replaced. Take hold of both pedals and move these against each other. There should be no movement. It may be possible to tighten the bolt (in the centre of the crank) with a socket, if the socket has thin enough walls. If not, then your LBS should be prepared to do this while you wait.

Excellent thanks I'll look at that. Little oil on the cleat contact points and check movement in the pedals. Will report back

Found it! The cleat contact points on the pedals just needed oiling :D
