afx237viWhere's it all gone wrong for the Australians on the track? 4th in the team sprint, neither McGee nor Lancaster got out of the qualifying in the men's pursuit. How the mighty have fallen...
Like any sport its all swings and round abouts. We have some good young guys and girls coming through but it takes time to develop them as you guys are now seeing the results of. Still im looking forward to the womens sprint, the Anna Meares saga has been pretty intresting.Take care of the luxuries and the necessites will take care of themselves.0 -

GB team even now has the very same in terms of good experience mixed in with those who are coming through who are also performing. Kenny and Burke etc who are producing great rides while benefitting from the experience of wiggins, hoy, staff etc. I really do think that GB program is something else rather than just being our turn to have an up or down...I do agree you do get it coming around but a really strong program will breed an era of results not just a one off generation who produce.
You can already see the next wave of GB team coming through in the program and that points to more than swings and roundabouts and instead a great program producing results.
MgGee should clearly still be able to perform, whether its just a one off or he simply isn't prepared right for this one I guess we will see in the team pursuit.0 -

Every single Brit who's stepped on the track so far has ended up with a medal...0

Great to be dishing out the embarrassment, not, being on the end of it, for once.
More of the same, tomorrow, for certain.
That Jamaican sprinter Bolt is utterly unbelievable. Trouble is, I keep wanting to call him Udo."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -
Eurostar wrote:Eurosport did a better job. The 43 seconds were full of tension because David Harmon was wondering how Hoy was going to get back on.
He was good in the race for bronze too, pointing out a very exciting wheelspin at the start by the German lead out man. Which Porter missed, of course.
Seenseveral of your other critical posts. You clearly do not understand track racing. Do you really think Hoy would not get back on or win? He is the reigning 1k champion and can do 1k in 60 seconds, of course he would get back on, why was Harmon worried? The fact is, for the sprint, the first rider (Staff) is balls out for his 250m then pulls off, second rider (Kenny) hangs on then does his 100% effort. For bioth the max efforts Hoy has to stay with them judging his effort to keep enough for the final 250m.
The team is put in this order taking that into account. If you reversed the order there would have been chaos with hiuge gaps in wheels.
The fact there was the gap shows just how well Staff and Kenny rode. Unfortunately as Hoy was a but far back he probably lost a little bit of time so no new record, but judged his effort sp as not to overcook himself holding the wheel which he would have paid for in last 250m and could possibly have cost them the race.
Even 5 m back there is still a fair bit of slipstream effect.
Ideally for a record time he would have wanted to be right on Kenny''s wheel but he wasn't and still won.0 -

Actually I was pretty confident Hoy would get back on for the reasons you mentioned. I thought Harmon was over-dramatising. But he (Harmon) did a good job of sowing the seeds of doubt which made it even more dramatic for the viewer.
Your second point above is one I made earlier. It would be fascinating for someone to interview Hoy and ask him how much faster he could have finished if he had come straight off Kenny's wheel.<hr>

Hi there.
I think that was a little harsh! Hoy didn't deliberately fall that far back... We were all worried. Laying off a little to take a run is one thing, but in a team sprint the seccond rider will already be accelerating to the line before he peels off, so laying off is not such an advantage.
The Keirin was a masterpiece - Hoy did what everyone knew he would do and blasted off the front. Edgar was boxed in by no less than 4 riders at the bell though... He showed fantastic judgement to keep his cool, lean on Kelly a little, then follow the Japanese rider out of the box before coming round him on the back straight. A very impressive ride.

Hi there.
The answer was in the qualifying round where they held together much better, went faster and bagged the 750m world record!
Cheers, Andy0 -
I was at the velodrome yesterday, and I'm going again today. I had really good seats right next to the track. Lots of Brits in the crowd.
After the Keirin semi, I shout "Well done Chris" and he waved and said thanks, which was nice. He came and got a British flag from the guy next to me.
Llaneras's wife was just behind me too.
Then I got fast car to the athletics and saw the 100m, and Bolt's girlfriend and friends were right by us too.

Unfortunately, I'm flying back tomorrow - I have some more photos, but the camera's packed at the moment.
The track was good again today. It looked really easy for Hoy and VP. The pursuit team were the most impressive though - they seem so much faster in the flesh.
Two other things I noticed: The huge amount of warming down Romero does. After doing her initial media bits she did one session, then after the medal presentation and more media, she did another session.
Also, being higher up today, I appreciated how much bigger Team GB is than the rest of the teams. They take up twice the space as the Aussies (the next biggest) and encroach on fair amounts of the spare areas. They also have three times the staff everyone else does. They were also the only team who had five team pursuiters doing the full warm-up (Burke being the fifth).
Another thing to note is, for all sports more or less, once the Chinese competitiors have all finished the locals just bugger off home en masse, which is why sometimes late on it looks like the stadium is half empty.Twitter: @RichN950 -

We've yet to have the Ryder Cup which could provide a winner for both the team and individual awards. Hamilton will be impossible to beat if he wins the F1 Championship. Nope, no amount of track cycling Gold medals will change that. Unless a minor Royal crops up between now and then winning at Scrabble or something.0

Why does Cavendish not do this event. Surely his kick over the final 250m would leave all four of the semi-finalists for dead? It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired. You quit when the gorilla is tired.0
