Hi all,
Can you tell me where the crank boss is? i am trying to remove a squre tapered crank arm and it says that if the cranks are hard to move with the exttractor, that by using a rubber mallet to tap the crank boss will help to loosen it.
Cheers

I'd say that the boss is the central bit of the end of the crank arm that fits onto the BB axle (i.e the bit with the square hole in it). But how belting it with a rubber mallet will help I can't think - I'd have though that would drive it on harder.
If you're having trouble with an extractor, make sure that the outer bit that screws into the crank arm is screwed in and tighten properly. Then if need be, slip an extension over your spanner/ratchet arm (piece of 25mm steel conduit tubing is ideal, about 24" long) - that will give you more leverage to get the extractor moving.0 -

it is a very well know way of braking the "seal" on a taper connection.
one of the best ways to get a MINI flywheel off when a puller is just not enough."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
