Hi
Can someone briefly explain to me the difference between medium and short cage versions GS and SS on a Dura Ace 7800 rear derailleur apart from the obvious lengths.Does it have something to do with your chain length and gear ratio.

cheers

  • I think it is to do with gear capacity, allowing you to run a compact chainset with a widely spaced block at the back.

    SS - short cage
    GS - Medium cage

If you have a look on the Shimano it'll tell you somewhere the different capacities - I can't can't remember the Shimano capacities off the top of my head - but medium cage will have a larger capacity (ie can handle enough chain for larger range cassette + larger difference in chainrings)

If you're using a road ratio cassette, you only really need the medium cage if you've got a triple chainset.
