I have done La Ruta, its a great challenge, you should go for it
In terms of kit for La Ruta a couple of things are key, a bike that has lots of mud clearance and you can shoulder to walk with, the first day is seriously muddy alot of people run hardpack tyres because its so muddy it does not make any difference but the best option are good mud clearing tyres.
The second day is pretty tough descending so you need tyres with tough sidewalls but roll well as there is a bit of road.
Last day fast rolling hardpack tyres.
The most important tip I can give is replace all of the running gear on your bike before you go as La ruta eats chains, cassettes and mechs for breakfast and if its not brand new it wont last!0
