I've got a very annoying rattle from my front wheel. I'm riding a cube peloton race, carbon fork, fulcrum racing 5's.
Every time I go over a bump there is a rattle and a vibration from the front wheel. I thought at first the nuts on the hub were loose, so tried to tighten them, but they weren't loose. The wheel is perfectly true, QR is tight. Nothing appears to be cracked anywhere. Any ideas?Cycling prints

My bike has just started to make a clicking noise, it must be related to the rear drivechain as the noise only appears when I shift into any of the smallest 5 cogs and am turning the pedals. The bike has only done around 500 miles, any ideas?0

The cables have probably been stretched slight. This is normal. I would check the alignment of both derailleurs. I expect that the chain is rubbing against the front derailleur or the rear derailleur is misaligned causing the chain to not sit neatly on a cog. If it's not this, i would attempt to identify exactly where the noise is coming from, then proper advice can be given.0 -
I've noticed that when i turn the handle bars, i get a creaking noise. I think i've located it down to a gear cable rubbing inside the housing. When i gently feel the cable, i can feel a vibration. When i press firmly on the cable, the noise disappears. I've never had noise originate from this before. Without replacing the cable, is there a quick fix? I assume lube or oil. Is there a nice way to apply it? Thanks0

I've been getting some weird noises recently from the chain and on some gears it was changing into gear and then slipping out after a few turns of the crank.
It gotten worse and now it is doing this in every gear at almost exactly two rotations of the crank, which is obviously pain in the ass to cycle.
Wondering what the exact problem is or how to fault find it.
Ideas/suggestions would be appreciated
I would check the alignment of the rear derailleur. I'm guessing that it's a misaligned. There is an adjustment screen on the cable housing just before the derailleur to adjust the alignment of the derailleur.0 -

Thanks, it's not front derailleur rubbing as I fitted a chain catcher recently and set it up again. (It's not rubbing on the chain catcher either).
I've been out on it tonight and the drivechain is just noisier than it should be as well as the clicking sound in smaller cogs, it's Sram Red so not like it's a junk groupset. I suspect you're right with the rear derailleur theory, I'll do some youtubing and set it up again.0 -
All done, the rear derailleur alignment was well out and quick 5 minute youtube lesson had me sorting it pretty quickly0

Hi,
I have a clicking noise coming from my rear wheel (I think).
It is only happening while I am sat on the bike, not when I upend the bike and spin the wheel.
It is also happening whilst freewheeling so I am pretty sure it is not the BB.
Any ideas?2014 Giant Defy 1

When i am pedalling and just as my pedal is up on the right drivetrain side i get a quite loud ticking noise. It happens when i am having to put a bit of effort in, ie uphill or fast on flat. Doesn't happen when i am not sat on it and am just moving it on my workstand. Have tightened pedals and grease the threads on them. Really annoying as have a 125 mile sportive tomorrow and will do my head in!0

Most common culprit for that is pedal bearings and/or bottom bracket cups working loose (if external bottom bracket).0

Turned out to be really simple.
Took the bike to my LBS and the spokes were rubbing where they met. They just put a bit if chain lube on the spokes.2014 Giant Defy 1

My gears whir or hum quite a bit when in the big ring - I thought it might be the chain rubbing on the front derailleur but there's plenty of clearance. I've also checked allignment of the rear derailleur and it looks fine.
Any suggestions or is this normal? I've previously ridden singlespeeds and sturmey archer hub bikes for years so I'm not familiar with the sound of derailleur gears0 -

Just got a new set of the 2014 carbon composite 105 pedals with my Canyon. They creaked a bit from day one now after 2 weeks when climbing they creak like a knackered 20 year old mountain bike. A bit of grease has oozed out an a bit of what looks like fibreglass fabric. This seems such a rare occurrence that no one believes me when I say they are faulty. Anyone else suffering faulty carbon composite 105 pedals?0

had a tick/click once per revolution on the down stroke non drive side, could have sworn it was pedal or crank arm or BB, turned out to be something related to the rear wheel, either the QR or the tension of said QR, repositioned the rear wheel and changed the tension tick gone.

Hello
Bought the Scott foil frame di2 ultegra combo from Westbrook, and it's absolutely fantastic, but..... there seems to be a really obnoxious rattle which I believe is coming from the headset/front fork. I've taken it all out carbon greased any clamping and normal greased the bearings, theres no creak or stress sounds, but bumps on the road really really makes it rattle, I've been down poor surfaced roads and just had to listen to a none stop 3 minute rattle, there's no play at all in the headset/fork either. I originally thought this might be the junction box inside the frame, so wrapped it in pipe insulator and it sits in very nice and snug. I've never ever had a rattle on a frame like this, and it's really winding me up, nothing seems to move incorrectly, you can't hear the noise simply picking the bike up and dropping it a few inches, I can't accept this is just how it is these days for light frames, as I've had better without problems.
Any chance anyone may of had the same issue? or perhaps some further trial and error procedures I could follow?
Cheers0 -
Latest clicking turned out to be that the pretension on my look keo had gone and allowed the spring to rattle but only on certain parts of the pedal stroke.
Thought it was the bottom bracket.Racing is rubbish you can\'t relax and enjoy it- because some bugger is always trying to get past.0 -
I'm getting a click/clunk noise from the crankset area - it's not on every rotation of the crank but every rotation of the chain. Whilst out last weekend I had the same noise and halfway through my ride the chain snapped (didn't quite snap, a pin had worked free). The noise only appears whilst climbing in lower gears.
Chain is 2 1/2 months old with 1500 miles on it, have checked to see if all the pins are sitting correctly and checked that there isn't a stiff link and all looks good.
Should add, I recently changed pedals and have checked these but noise doesn't seem to be coming from them.0 -
HI ALL
i currently have American Classic 58mm Wheels - Bladed Spokes ( Carbon )
Recently made the move from 10 - 11SPD...Had Rear wheel totally Rebuilt , from Bearings , Spokes ( Non Bladed < Nipples ) Free-hub - you get the pic
Im aware that a new Wheel Build will have a period of Bedding in ( More than 300KM ????) My Point being sounds like Spokes are rubbing and pinging , intermittently- sometimes every other revolution , does not make noise when when free wheeling...) almost sounds like a brake cable from caliper is hitting a spoke
Took wheel back to bike shop - spoke to mechanic , to which he te - tensioned , put Freeze Spoke on Nipples in Rim - went to pick bike up and took it for quick spin and the dreading ping ping ping re appeared ....Mechanic & I are both at a loss to what it could be ...
Does anyone Know if American Classics are Spoke Specific or Nipple Specific....
Already put on on cross overs on spokes - same issue
Any thoughts , Or am i missing a trick here
Cheers & look forward to hearing thoughts0 -
Just I would add my recent experience to this thread in case it helps someone.
I replaced the chain (medium wear) on a Shimano 105 equipped bike. No issues with chain slippage etc so it seemed I had replaced it in time.
A couple of hundred miles later I started to get an intermittent small click from the drivetrain which I could hear, and feel through the pedals.
It was definitely linked to cadence rate, not wheel speed. I could also feel it in the chain, which made me think it had to be linked to the freehub.
Checked everything over visually and spun the pedals with the bike on the bike stand - no obvious issues. Checked all bearings and could find nothing amiss.
Replaced the pedals with the pair off another bike and tightened the chainrings but still no improvement.
Ordered new bottom bracket and freehub - fitted the freehub but still no improvement.
With the bike back on the bike stand I noticed that when I pedalled backwards, the re-usable chain link I had used was catching on the teeth of the next sprocket up the cassette, causing it to jump a little.
Nothing like this was happening when I pedalled forwards though.
I realised then, that I had used a KMC master link when I put the new chain on, not the SRAM ones that I normally use. So I replaced the KMC link with a SRAM one and the problem disappeared.
It looks like either the KMC link was a little wider than the SRAM link, or the KMC link was faulty.
How this info is of use to someone.

Got the same pedals , they were fine for about 6 weeks but now starting to sound awful. Not been for a ride out yet but after inspecting the cleat and the metal plate on the pedal itself, it seems to be friction causing the sound between the two. I have put a very light amount of grease on the plate and a bit over the cleat .
I will update tomorrow after my ride.0 -
Replaced the BB30 bearings on my Team on Friday and fitted the crankset tonight, just been for a spin round the block and the infernal clicking is still apparent, driving me mad and worried that something terminal will occur half way up Holme Moss next weekend (65 Roses Sportive)

Ok my little update after my fix , I went for my ride out with the club and we did a distance if 35 miles and no grinding noise . So it looks as though the bit of grease on the cleat and metal plate has worked for now. Trouble is I've got a rattling sound coming from the handlebar area , possibly the wheel. :-(0 -

Like yourself I had a simliar clicking noise and also thought it may be BB, but then after some months..SNAP, back axle and QR broke in half while I was riding. Fortunatley didnt make me crash just had to carry bike to train station. Must have been the QRs I had done them very tight.0 -
My front derailleur cable is "creaking" where it loops around the underneath of the bottom bracket (carbon frame). I mean that is where the stiffness is happening. The front mech runs stiff too because of this and it is causing imperfect shifting. The mech cable goes into a little hole underneath. The BB's plastic cable guide is setup so the cable does not run right off it and up, it instead sort of touches stuff where it goes into that little hole. Please help!
If this is a common issue on CF frames, what can be done?
It looks like this (not my bike):

Some BB cable guides are a bit short, like this:
But longer one's are readily available, like this:
You could get one that is too long (or of it is too long) and cut it to size if the long arm for the front mech is butting up against the cable aperture through the frame. They are cheap as chips and you can get them on fleabay.
The more plastic the cable is going over, the less friction - in fact, the cable should not rub up against any part of the frame.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -
I have a creak that only occurs under pressure i.e. climbing, when the rhs pedal is just at the bottom of the stroke. This noise occurs whether I am cleated in on the rhs or not.
I have mtb style SPD pedals and have removed and replaced them. The pedal bearings seem to be smoothly rotating.
I have an FSA Gossamer Megaexo crankset running in an Ultegra HT2 BB.
The crank spindle bolts are tight and the HT2 BB still has original grease and rotates smoothly.
I have removed and replaced the seatpost.
Any ideas where to look next?0 -
Check the chain ring bolts are tight. If it's still there I'd remove the BB, clean and replace using copper slip. Make sure to tighten to the correct torque.0

I get a "squeak" noise once per revolution of the cranks in the rain if I pedal harder, seems to only be on the right side, I thought it was the rubber on my shoe rubbing the crank, but it isn't that. Its loud enough for passers by to hear it.
I built the bike up myself and I know there's no rubber anywhere that could be making the noise. Squeaking isn't so bad I suppose... in other words I haven't got a clue what it could be.0
