Road or Cross?

My 11 year old son is becoming ever more enthusiastic about starting to cycle with me on the road. He already has a childs Giant mtb but I wonder whether a Road bike such as a Giant SCR2 or a Cross bike would be best?

there is only marginal difference in speed between road bikes and cx bikes with slicks, the cx will have tougher wheels and a bit more clearance so can fit mudguards. I'd shortlist a few and then see which feels best for him
