Single Speed Gear Ratios

I've just picked up my first single speed, a Giant Bowery. Cheap I know but it suits my needs for now and was a bargain for £225.
I've only had it 1 day but the factory fitted 46/17 ratio isn't stiff enough for me and I want a higher top speed.
Can anyone suggest the easiest way of altering the ratio? Should I just drop the sprocket to a 14 or other or get a bigger ring or both, what's the best way forward?
Also, being totally new to SS/track kit what are recommended makes of chainrings and sprockets.
Another question - it came with a 3/32 chain and chainset. Would I be better off switching to a 1/8 and I assume I'd need to change both sprocket and chainring for that?
Final question, as and when I do replace the wheels (yes I really cannot leave a bike alone), where do you start looking for wheel upgrades for this style of bike?
Cheers all

I'd say bigger at the front, although you're more likely to bend it, you are less likely to snap a tooth of a 17 than a 14.
Stick with 3/8" as sheldon says so.
As for wheels, openpros on some hubs or other!0 -

I run a 48/16 which does the trick. For some really decent advice try here: http://www.londonfgss.com/ Very helpful bunch.
