My 105 levers are no longer changing gears - help!

I have some 9 speed 105 levers
The right one has suddenly stopped working. Leaving me in my highest gear on my cassette (the one closest to the spokes)

I didn't crash or knock it (although it's had plently of knocks in the past :? )

I did get it once to get into a faster gear, I could easily change into faster gears.

So I'm now stuck again in a slow gear
(not too bad at the time, as I was at the bottom of a hill !)

anyway I've now got to try to fix it
I guess the lever is at fault, as the derailleur seem flexable enough

Is there any chance that I'll be able to fix it if I take the lever apart?
What do I have to look for?

    I'm no Rob

I have found a loose gear cable end in my lever
It must have come out of the 'holder' in the lever

I can see the groove the cable should be in.but not the 'holder'
It is hidden, round the corner, I would guess I need to change gear to bring it back into view - but changing gear does nothing

    any help?

Probably easiest to slacken off the cable at the derailleur and poke it around until it's back in place in the lever. Not my fault if it breaks though :p
  • GT85 your cable outers (at each end), and just pull the cable through a couple of times. sounds like its just got stuck up there (crud or a bit of rust). it should start working, but do that to all cable outers in associated with that gear leaver to be sure. if it doesnt, you need to replace the gear cable and its outer. will cost £4 max to replace the cable and outer or maybe more depending on if you're gonna do it urself or not. regularly gt85 the ends of ur cable outers to stop this happening again!

I've got my cable out now
but the lever still doesn't seem to be working
It does do all the right clicks up+ down the range
but during the clicking, none of the internal bits seem to be rotating

I can see the groove where the cable lies inside, but the place where the cable end sits is out of view.

As I can't get it back with chaging gear - I guess its just broke + its new ones for me.

I guess I'll have to source another lever...

Apart from a liberal application of GT85/WD40 whilst working the lever back and forth to try and clean out any dirt and debris that may be gunking up the internals of the shifter, there's very little else you can do - the internals are not user-serviceable and usually requires the replacement of the 'module' or probably easier to find a replacement lever. STI's have tiny springs in the mechanisms and once gone are rendered useless. Spare levers come up regularly on ebay - the consequence of crash damage - I expect you'd be able to pick up a spare for less than the cost of a 'module' from LBS/Madison.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

My front lever recently stopped working. LBS said the clutch mechanism was broken and I would need to have a new lever - £60. Was not happy, but felt much better when next out on the club run, especially when changing gears going uphill. I remember what it was like with shifters on the downtube.
