Fitting a 9 speed cassette to a Mavic Ksyrium Equipe Hub Q's

Sorry, first time cassette fitter here :-)
I have some just about brand new '08 Mavic Ksyrium Equipe wheels and I have a brand new SRAM PG950 9 speed cassette to put on it when it arrives tomorrow.
The hub has a thin metal washer type thing that only fits on a certain way so I'm guessing it's important.
Am I right in thinking that the 9 speed cassette will be narrower than a 10 speed cassette as it has one less cog and therfore, I'll need to keep the metal washer thing on to space the back of the 9 speed cassette?
I've bought the cassette fitting nut and an adjustable spanner. My second question is: Is it wrong to be so excited about fitting a cassette all by myself?

  • don't lose the thin washer !

If you're installing a Shimano cassette you need to fit the small washer first.

Not sure about an SRAM cassette - I suspect you may not need to use this as I didn't on my COSMOS wheels when I fitted a 9 speed 12-26 SRAM cassette (but did when I went to a 9 speed Shimano 12-27 as its marginally thinner and the thin spacer takes up the slack).

No a 9 speed cassette isn't any wider than a 10 speed. The 10 speed cogs are closer together to accomodate the extra cog.

No it isn't wrong to be excited about fitting yourself........I still get excited after nearly 30 years (but the first 20 weren't exciting when it came to removing stubborn freewhees....!).

Just think how excited you'll be when you do your first bike build.............knicker wetting stuff for sure.

    Hope this helps.

    Whoa !

A Shimano 9sp cassette is wider than 10sp.

SRAM cassettes are the same as the equivalent Shimano cassette, they're interchangable Shimano 8sp = SRAM 8sp, Shimano 9sp = SRAM 9sp, Shimano 10sp = SRAM 10sp

But what you have there is a Mavic hub.
And Mavics - Ksyriums, Cosmics, Aksiums - have the Mavic M10 hub, which is a Mavic-fit hub not 'proper' Shimano although it has Shimano splines.

It can take Campag or Shimano, because as well as taking Shimano cassettes, Mavic sell Campag-spaced but Shimano-splined 10sp cassettes which fit on it.

The Campag cassettes are a bit wider than Shimano, so to fit Shimano you also need a Mavic spacer which will be supplied with the wheels (a 2.something mm big thin washer basically - sounds like what you've got)

A Shimano 10sp cassette is actually narrower than Shimano 8 or 9sp cassettes, so when you get a new 10sp cassette it comes with a thin spacer (1.something mm) and you fit this to Shimano wheels which are 8/9/10sp compatible.
(Shimano also make some 10sp-only hubs, some rarer Dura Ace/Ultegra models, and on these a 8 or 9sp cassette will be too wide and you wouldn't be able to get it on)

But for you, with Mavic M10 hub
    - to fit your 9sp SRAM cassette (or to fit any 8 or 9sp Shimano or SRAM cassette), you need to use the Mavic spacer between the hub and cassette
    - if you wanted to fit 10sp Shimano, you'd use the Mavic spacer and the Shimano 10sp spacer
(and to fit Campag, you'd use simply the Mavic Shimano-splined but Campag-spaced cassette and no spacers)
  • I have a similar query:

I want to buy a new bike which would come as 10 speed with Mavic Aksiums. I currently use Mavic Ksyriums on a 9 speed set-up. Would I be able to put the 10 speed cassette on the Ksyriums and put the 9 speed cassette on the new Aksiums? By the way, both are Ultegra.

    Cheers in advance

    Joe
  • oh....forgot to add....I have Ksyrium Elites.....and the cassette is Ultegra. Cheers

Yes, you should be able to swap the cassettes, with the spacers behind them, from one wheel to the other, as both wheels are Mavic M10 hubs.
The 10sp cassette should have two spacers behind it, the thicker Mavic one and the thinner Shimano 10sp one; the 9sp cassette should just have a Mavic one behind it.
Ensure the thinner spacer, the Shimano 10sp one, moves-over with the 10sp cassette to the other wheel. Both the Mavic spacers should be the same, so you can either swap them with the cassette or leave them on the wheel and just move over the Shimano 10sp one.

    - I've swapped-over Shimano 8sp and 10sp cassettes between Cosmic Elite and Ksyrium Elite wheels in this way the past...
  • to fit your 9sp SRAM cassette (or to fit any 8 or 9sp Shimano or SRAM cassette), you need to use the Mavic spacer between the hub and cassette

I didn't use the washer with my COSMOS wheels when I fitted a 9 sp SRAM 12-26 block, but did when I changed to a 9 sp Shimano 12-27.
