I am upgrading my crank from FSA slk Pro to K force light and am intending to do this myself. On reading the Park Tools site they talk about facing the bottom bracket sheel. Will I need to do this before I fit the K force light or should it be OK.Thanks in advance

what cranks do you have currently?

this is necessary if the frame has not been faced already, it is definitely a LBS job though, try to get them to check the BB treads whilst they're at it...

Thanks wheneve. The bike is only 6 months old and has FSA SLK pro cranks.I managed to get the K Force Light with ceramic bottom bracket for £200 new!.so thought it was worth doing.Do you mean the fitting of the bottom bracket and crank is a LBS job or the facing. Thanks

facing is a LBS job, as it is worth haveing the tools for fitting cranks/bb as that is done fairly often, but facing is a once per frame occurance.

IIRC the slk are external BB as well so the frame should be faced already. Hence whip the old one out and flog it/keep for spares and then fit the new one.

l so the frame should be faced already

    Rarely, in my experience.

well, they work fine if you don't face it but, you can see dramatically reduced bearing life. It also depends on the paintjob, AFAIK frames are manufactured faced, but the paintjob messes it up. Top frames come pre-faced post painting, and some only have thin even paint. Powdercoats usually really need it.
