Got a 160mm Hayes Stroker Trail brake set from Merlin delivered at the weekend and realised i have Shimano Centre locked rotors so the new rotors won't go on.

Is it ok to run Shimano centre lock rotors with other brand calipers??

I see an adapter can be bought to turn them into 6 bolt - but like the centre lock idea. Thinkin of maybe gettting a pair of 160mm XT Rotors as my cheapy front rotor is a little warped.

If it's a bad idea to mix makes i'll have to look at getting the 6 bolt adapter.

Cheers

not normally an issue, but you can get adaptors that will allow you to run 6 bolt discs on shimano splined hubs (NOT Saint hubs).

    bells......

i do the same thing on my hardtail.

hayes nines, with shimano centrelock rotors.....basically because i dont really want to spend unneccessary cash on adapters, and defo not go out and get new hub/wheels, just because the rotor is different.

    From what i have seen/read/measured......

Disk rotors from all manufacturers are the same thickness (or within a bawhair). If folks know differently, then please let me know....I like to know stuff like that  .

As long then as the rotor is the correct diameter for you caliper mount, then technically, there should be no issue.

At the end of the day, they are all made out of the same stuff.

My Shimano rotors seem noticeably thinner than the Formula, Avid and Hope discs I've also used. In fact, Shimano's discs seem to have a reputation for being flimsier (and cheaper) than other brands.

But when I've swapped wheels between bikes the calipers usually seem to self-adjust well enough.

Not according to my mates micrometer gauge....... it reckons the difference between hope, hayes and shimano rotors (the ones we had when debating this exact topic) were so close you could call them the same. It was a while ago, when fitting the nines to my hardtail, so don't have the actual numbers to hand.....just remember that we said might as well call it the same!

It may have been one of shimanos meatier rotors, but it was a cheap one, so would have thought it would be the other way around.

Nice one! - ordered a new splined XT rotor to replace my warped front and shall stay with my current back rotor for now.

Strange, my hi-tech measuring device (fingers) definitely indicate my XT rotors are thinner tha those supplied with Formula K18 and Avid Juicy 7 brakes.

Don't doubt your experiment's findings though, can only suspect Shimano disc thickness can vary, as you say.
  • i swaped my 160mm deore rotors for 180mm xt's and there much thicker fairly sure they vary depending on the price
