Converting mine to my daily hack

I've started riding daily to work on my old trustworthy Giant.. I was toying with the idea of getting a commuter however will probably end up spending the money and more on an all mountain bike for off road riding.
I want to convert this to a daily hack that I can use and abuse in all weather without caring about it much...
Firstly I will need to change the tyres.. Any suggestions on some good / cheap tyres.. I was thinking about the Specialized nimbus or if anyone else can suggest anything..
Secondly, the crap forks are on their way out and I will probably change for a set of rigid forks... Again, any suggestions.. I've heard that the Kona P2 forks are ok? I've measured my steerer (for buying second hand to reduce costs) and I think i am right in saying its about 210mm???
Any help most appreciated for a newb!!!

about, i would have said 205mm. take the top cap off and see how far down the top of the steerer is.
i would pop into the LBS and see what they have out the back or down to the Police auctions and spend £30 on a rat bike."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

tyres specialised fat-boys, forks superstar carbon fibre rigids.
The other good place to get a rat bike is the household recycling...0
