Hi Everyone,

I'm thinking of buying an Enigma Eclipse and I was wondering if anyone could please give me their experiences or feedback on this model.

I know it's at the bottom of the Enigma range and wondered if the build quality was as good as the rest of the Enigma range.

Thanks

  • Yep, I've got one. Got it in May 08. It is fantastic. Had steel frames (Mercian) before and more latterly mid range alu frames before this.

It's not the lightest frame in the world (but by no means is it heavy), but is probably on a par with a decent alu frame. The ride is closer to an alu frame in terms of stiffness/acceleration, but with the removal of the hand/butt punishing road buzz. The longest ride I have done on it so far is 3.5 hours or so, and it was bliss.

The Echo with the curved seat stays I guess would give a more plush ride, but I think they look slightly odd, hence I went for the Eclipse.

I builit it up with parts from an older bike, and it is superb. Weld quality is top notch as well. With tight clearances, and a coating of baby oil (!), it looks as fabulous as it rides.

    Hi dieselengine

Many thanks indeed for your reply.

Excuse my ignorance, but could you please clarify what you mean by "tight clearances" ?

E.G. are you suggesting that the tyres are very close to the chainstays for instance ?

What's the biggest tyre that it could take ?

    Many thanks again

if it's any use I've ridden one. It seemed a very comfortable bike ... though the wheels, tires and saddle were not my usual so you have to factor that in.

I'd say it lacked a bit of bite and wasn't really my cup of tea (my normal frame is a 585 ultra), but it was undoubtedly a rolls royce type ride.

    Hi wildmoustache,

Yes, that was useful, thanks very much.

As I intend to use it mainly for leisure and fitness rides, then it sounds quite suitable.

    Thanks very muck
  • Hi Van,

I have Krylion Carbons (700x25) on mine, and there is no rubbing etc, but the space between the chainstays is probably 2-3mm each side. It makes no difference though, unless you were intending to put on 28s, or have wheels which flex under force.

    Thanks for that dieselengine,

Wow, there isn't much scope for your wheel to come out of true or for the wheel to flex slightly then.

    Thanks again.
