New rear wheel - UST Rim?

After slightly bending my rear wheel on a misjudged curbstone, I think I may invest in something new as my endeavors to straighten it have met with limited success :?

I don't do anything too extreme just commuting and XC, but I am on the weighty side  so something "robust" would be good. Currently I'm using the 19mm Rodi rims and unbranded hubs which came with my Giant Terrago two years ago.

I really don't want to spend too much, but I would like a UST rim, and I'm struggling with finding which rims are tubeless.

My spec is:
19mm (or more)
Black (or predominantly black)
6 bolt disc hub
UST

Any advice?

considering you mention 6-bolt i assume you want an entire wheel:

    mavic 819
    deore xt
    dt ss db spokes

    built by merlin...

CRC list the XT M756 made-up with Mavic XM819/DT DB spokes for £89.99 vs. £95 at Merlin for an "XT Hub" with no specifics plus the rim/spokes.

Question is, what is CRC wheel-building like?

tbh, i wouldn't trust CRC for wheel building.

merlin actually do a decent wheel, and okay, you might not necessarily get the latest hub, or it might be OE, but the wheel will be evenly tensioned, pre-stressed and true. It'll also stay like that. It is a £5 for build quality that you can rely on.

Though it was more than I wanted to spend, I've just ordered a Mavic XM819 / XT M756 / DT DB Black wheel from Merlins as I'm sure it'll be far more durable than a basic Deore / 17mm rim set-up for £50.

I'm still wondering whether the extra £5 for the EX823 rim (and another 250g) would have been worthwhile though :?

for xc and commuting, 819 will be plenty strong enough. The UST rims are stronger anyway due to the sealed bed i think.

I've abused a pair of merlin 717 on deore with the same spokes on my rigid ss for 8months now, I broke a pair of steel forks and not a single wobble on the wheels yet.

You don't want to know what i do to my 719s from them!

i run 819 and they are spot on, light and very strong, they are mavics cross mountain which are meant to be tougher than xc wheels so should be spot on.

I fitted the new wheel at the weekend, and I am very impressed!

It's spot-on true, feels strong and durable, and the whole set-up of hub, spokes, rim, and tyre is as light as my old wheel without the tyre

Fitting the UST (Racing Ralph) tyre was an absolute pleasure too, no faff, just a couple of pumps and it was beginning to inflate :)

The pops as the UST tyre seated in the UST rim at around 50psi did make me jump though

Having a UST rim really does make running Tubeless far simpler than all the tubed faffing about! 8)
