Maintenance stands
I've reached a point where I'm sick of trying to lean my bike up against the wall to oil the chain, pump the tyres up, adjust the brakes etc. and it swinging round and taking a massive chunk out of my parents wall!! Tried turning it upside down and still not right. SO - I was wondering about stands - do people find these useful? Is there one out there which is not too expensive - around £50 maybe? Is there a way to make one easily perhaps?

If that's all you want it for, something like this would be perfect. It just holds the rear wheel off the floor and holds the bike stable.0

I am using Revolution Tune Up Mini Workstand to allow me to clean/tune my bike. It is good enough for me.... cost 15 pounds
See it here.

I've got one of these and it's fantastic.

Little more than £50 but they go on sale sometimes - I'm sure I only paid £60 for mine a couple of months ago.I'm left handed, if that matters.0 -
I use a Park bench-mounted one. Can't remember how much I paid but it was more than 50 I think. Works very well.Facts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0

I've just bought one of these and waiting for it to be delivered.

I'm in the process of building up a bike and my old stand gave up the ghost
If you can wait a week or so depending on ribbles delivery time i'll give you an opinion on it.0 -
i have this one from wiggle http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/LifeL ... 360009217/ was £39 on sale which is about its worth. £80 is expensive but great stand all the same0

Any repair stand is better than no repair stand, but the cheaper wobbly ones are of limited use for heavier work - on the bottom bracket area for example.
Once you get one, you'll wonder how you ever managed without.
It's worth looking out on Ebay for a Park PCS-1 or PCS-4, which are usefully solid yet still fold their legs for stowage.
I'm fortunate enough to have a permanent workshop so I'm able to use a Park PRS-3 OS stand. It's pleasure to work with but weighs about 100 lbs and isn't exactly portable.
(If you have a carbon frame and seatpost, you're better off with a race type stand like a Park PRS-20 by the way)0 -
I have been looking at 2 stands on the Ribble site:
http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/productde ... 0000000000
http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/productde ... 0000000000
How do these rate?
I have noticed most pics showing a bike fitted to this type of stand show it clamped by the seatpost.
Is this where you should clamp it or can you use the frame?
Also, my seatpost is carbon - is it ok to clamp to this?Stumpjumper FSR 09/10 Pro Carbon, Genesis Vapour CX20 ('17)Carbon, Rose Xeon CW3000 '14, Raleigh R50

I've got this chap. The bottom bracket area sits on the stand, and the arm hooks over the down tube. The 2 arms prop on the ground, thus lifting the rear wheel a couple of inches in the air. At £22, it's a cheap alternative to a full on maintenance stand. I can happily make adjustments and turn the cranks at some speed (by hand) and the bike remains stable (stable enough - there is some flex, i think thats to be expected for £20).
Obviously this limits the sort of maintenance you can do on the bike, but for derailleur adjustements, and general drivetrain stuff it does me fine.Rides a Cannondale Synapse 105.0 -

Will it be okay to degrease and wash the bike on that stand?0 -

I certainly do - quick wipe over with a bit of old towel afterwards keeps it nice.
The only downside to them is they don't work with bikes fitted with mudguards, if that's of any consequence to you.
Plenty of pics of them in action here if you want some detail shots:

+1 for the EBC stand. I got mine in the sale last year for £50. Think it was around the end of August / beginning of September so not long to wait to see if they are in the sale again.0 -
I've just received the Ediburgh Bicycle Tune up workstand. It's branded with there own Revolution label, but as fair as I can tell it's the same stand that is by Merlin cycles and others as Bike Tools. It also appears to the same as the ebay available Union stand.
EB have have it in the sale till the 6pm Sunday, so currenlty £49.99 with free P&P which is cheaper than anywhere else.
Seems a nice bit of kit, tho does have plastic head piece not, metal as in the pics. A lot larger than any pictures make it look.0 -

Until I get a decent stand I use one of these 9.99 jobs - cheap and cheerful.
I have a rod to park under the arm to take the weight of my beast of a tourer , but for road bikes - sweet.Spring!
