Gear change problems with a road 9 speed 11/26 cassette

Around where I live it is as flat as yesterdays beer and a 12/34 tooth cassette that came with the bike is just not needed so I decided to try a 11/26 9 speed cassette thats meant for a road bike
Fitting was simple just like fitting a MTB cassette however the gear changes were rough and it kept skipping gears no matter how much I tweaked the cable adjuster I thought it was the chain so I went back to the 12/34 cassette and changing was fine
I noticed that there was a large gap between the top jockey wheel and the cassette when it should be only about the thickness of a pencil is this what is causing the problem
Do I need to fit a road mech if so which one is equivalent to SRAM X-9 and will it work with my SRAM X-9 shifters

did you shorten your chain? you will need to.
and you will need to reset your rear mech.
have a read of the how to on Park tools.
your mech will work fine with the cassette when set up correctly."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Sounds a lot like the chain is worn and meshed with the old cassette. Unless you change your chain on a regular basis I would reccomend a new chain.0

Chain and cassette are new, rear mech set up properly and chain is correct length. It all worked fine on the work stand but changes sluggishly on the road.
Think it might be a problem with SRAM mechs not having a B limit screw like Shimano. having the top jockey wheel an inch from the cassette means the mech has to take up the play in the chain before it can change gear.
Just fitted short cage mech to see if that solves the problem.Fig rolls: proof that god loves cyclists and that she wants us to do another lap0 -
sram mech still have a "B" screw but it work differently to shimanos. you can still set the mech closer to the cogs."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
