Kona Stinky 2007

At the moment I'm running a 2006 Kona Blast with an e13 Supercharger and a Blackspire Stinger with 2.5 Maxxis High Rollers. I'm loving it, but I can only do small DH on it, and I want to get into bigger stuff.

I'm on holiday in Canada at the moment and I've just ridden a Norco A Line at Blue Mountain. Totally awesome! This has made me want a new bike...

I'm looking at the 2007 Kona Stinky which I can get for £979 new!
Can I use 2.5 tyres with it ok? Also, will my Blackspire Stinger (Non-ISCG) be compatabile with the Stinky, with the e13?

I'm about 5" 10' what size frame would I need? I want to be able ride small XC too, so nothing really too small.

Or, anybody got any suggestions for another bike for around £1,000? I like the look of Norco if it helps.

Thanks guys!

So you want a bike for DH and xc?

You having a laugh? You could go for something that goes well up and down, but it wont be a fullon DH bike like the norco, and wont be as tough. I assume you want a full bike and DH is your priority?

    2.5's for XC!

the reason is what you actually want is two bikes.

sizing try them what feels best, (read the sticky)

will it fit? anything can be made to fit if you get the right bits.

  • No, obviously I can't get a bike that does both. I want to get into DH, so I'm looking for a bike more geared towards that. I said that I wanted to do a small amount of XC, so maybe something I could raise the seat on and itd be rideable?

Would you say the Stinky is a good bike, something to start on. I also read that it is pretty versitile.

  • I have an 05 Kona Coiler - similar to the Stinky, but less travel (6" each end). It handles XC OK, but not as well as a proper XC bike. It goes downhills OK, but not as well as a DH bike.

As an all rounder, though, it suits *my* needs very, very well.

You can ride anything XC, but the weight can be a killer, and longer travel can sap energy. The other negative is wheelbase - my Coiler is much slower turning than my XC bike, so suffers a bit in tight twisty singletrack.

But not much. For my riding, the Coiler has been the best bike I've ever had - strong enough that it doesn't break, downhill enough that I can have lots of fun, XC enough that I can ride up hills (as long as they aren't too big, or I accept that I'll be slow). Of the bikes in my garage, the Coiler gets dragged out far more than the others.

  • That Kona Coiler looks good, but, I'm more interested in getting a "mainly" DH rig.
I really appreciate the reply though, thanks a lot man!

What are people's general thoughts in regard to the Kona Stinky?
Would I be able to mount my e13 and Blackspire Stinger (non-ISCG) on it?

    Thanks a lot!

there is one option that will really really suit what you need. One of the Marin Quakes. Go test ride one and you'll be amazed.

But otherwise, if you really liked the A-line, well, why not buy an a-line, instead of settling for the Kona?
  • Marin Quake 7.1 2007, I was looking at that! Man, it looks awesome spec for the price! But I don't know how much longer they'll be stocked, as they don't do a 7.1 in the 2008 range and the others are a little pricey.

The Norco A Line would be amazing, but it's a little pricey! :(

I've heard a lot about the frames on the Kona snapping and stuff, it's kind of putting me off a little.

    Thanks for the reply! :D

It's not frame snapping that I'm worried about with the Konas. It's the frankly terrible suspension.
There was a local shop here, that had a previous model A-line going for £1050 last year. Go shop around, ask shops if they have any clearance stock, things like that.
  • Wow, That's a good price!

I'll look around, but I think I'll be hard pushed to find last years model anything right now :(

course you will, wait a few weeks, and the 2008 bikes will be discounted.
  • Yeah, but the annoying thing about that is they don't make a Quake 7.1 in the 2008 Range, so it'll be a little over my budget, even when the price is reduced... I don't know... I guess play it out and see what happens.

Are there any other bikes worth looking at? Thanks for the help, Dude!

My mate has the 07 stinky, and although a nice bike, the forks are shite, and will need upgrading, also for a £1600 (rrp) bike the rest of the spec is not as good as similar stlye bikes.
    What about the norco atomik?

  • That's a fair bit over my budget, I'd say I could stretch it to like £1,100. I know it may not be that much, but it's all I can do at the moment...

    Thanks for the suggestion though!

Is the 07 Stinky that bad, I've heard bad things about the forks, but they've got to be Ok for a beginner getting into DH, right?

The Stinky sounds like a good bike for the price, just I've heard bad things about it...
