Rear axle snapping

Hello, i have a slight problem with my 2003 GT Aggressor 2.0 it came all as standard with sub basic shocks which have sunk and a basic set up of brakes and gears which i changed. It came with QR front and rear wheel, which is great when you wanna go travel to a place in the car and ride up & down a few hills.

The first QR rear wheel axle i had snapped, i wasn't going down any jumps or ludicrous riding. I replaced it with a static wheel, which made it harder to get in the car, but i could feel the benefit. Since then, which was 2 years ago, i have replaced the rear axle 3 times because it keeps bending and that seems to put the alignment of the wheel out and it has a few mm of give either way, which feels very unstable and like i am gonna fall off.

I really don't want to be buying a new axle every 3 months, have you got any ideas about what axle i can buy or what i should do without spending a stack of money on a new hub and axle wheelset?? I am not in competition and use it for fun. Also has anyon erated Nuke Proof forks? They sound ACE.

Get the frame alignment checked. If the dropouts are out of line either way when you tighten the nut on the axle you're going to stress it and the slightest force in the wrong area can snap the axle. You are buying Cro-Mo axles?
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • Thank you for your reply, i saw your single speeder, it looks nice, you have obviously done alot of work to it.

I took the bike to a bike shop where they said they checkd the frame, they said it was okay and suggested i need a new wheelset, i am reluctant to do that. I will get a second opinion on the fram as soon as i can drive again, i had an op 2 months ago and abstaining from driving and biking - can't wait to get on the saddle again. But i do want to be up and running on a bike that won't kill me.

I will post a reply when i get second opinion.
Do you know much about forks, as i have RST budget things that have seized, fake adjustments etc. I was looking at Rock Shox TORA's, Dart 2 or Suntour XCM remote lockout.

Just to reiterate the above, most likely a frame out of alignment.

Do you know if the rear hub is a cassette or a screw on freewheel?

As for the forks, the Tora easily the best.
  • HI blue squidgy thing, the bike is a cassette, i was just looking at Funn EZX disc brakes and their descender wheelsets, mmm nice, not bad for 40 smackers.

I will check out a second opinion on the frame - i thought that would be the problem too. What makes the Tora easily the best, that is a bold statement to make-a!

    The name is Berk ;-)

More unusual to see an axle snap on a cassette hub, as the bearings are further apart (a problem with freewheels was that they were closer together, with lots of un supported axle) and did bend and snap a lot. This points to a possible frame problem. Unless you are really hammering it!

Tora is up the range compared to the Dart, and sports a much stiffer chassis, is lighter, smoother, stronger, and more options. XCm is real budget fair.
  • Thanks for the tora advice.

I am pretty sure it is cassette-i do hammer it alot i s'pose.
What is the best way to check if it is freewheel?

Have to look at it closely! This man should help:

Toras can be got for 90 quid at CRC.

Possible worn hub, resulting in cones coming loose, resulting in axle play, resulting in eventual snappage...take the cassette off etc and check the hub surface (provided you have regular bearings and not sealed cartridge types).
  • Ah i just checked out Sheldons site, it is most definately a cassette hub, it has splines.
I like CRC site - it has the best advice on it, apart from this site of course - but that's custom!

The bike is about 5 years old, so it could possibly be worn, i have only changed the front mech since the initial changes in 5 years - not too bad.

Blue squidgy thing, could it be that the hammering as caused the frame to bend, eventually causing the sxle to bend?

Yep, but as Stu says, if the internals of the hub are knackered, then a new axle will not work correctly, and keep coming loose, so also very likely.

I would say check frame again, when satisfied is ok, get new wheel.
  • Thanks both you guys very much for the advice, i'm off to sleep. Easy!
