Avid Juicy 5 setup

I've just bought some Avid juicy 5s to fit on my Giant XTC SX. Everything installed easily, except for the fact that the pads are too far apart (lever pulls right to the handle bars and applies little pressure to the rotor). Pumping the lever repeatedly makes no difference.

I've read lots of problems where the pads get too close together, but I'm having the exact opposite problem! Removing the wheel/rotor and pulling the levers in doesn't make much difference either.

Not sure what to do... could it be that they need bleeding (maybe not enough fluid?). Might be a trip to my local bike shop otherwise...

id say the system is underfilled and if it was me would bleed them. but not overly sure though. sounds like an odd problem.

also try adjusting the reach adjust screw. that can affect how far the lever is from the bar when the pads contact the rotor. well, it wokrs on my juicy 5's anyway!
I said hit the brakes not the tree!!

  • I bled them and it fixed the problem... quite satisfying. Come to think of it the levers were a little moist when they were delivered. I reckon the screw on the reservoir wasn't done up properly in the factory
