Does this weather make you want to move to sunnier climes?

Went out this morning and frankly it was pretty grim. Ok it was still better than not going for a ride but heavy rain, high winds and 16 degrees in mid August is just depressing

got to go and clean all the crap of my bike now

i agree with you there. many of my mates has moved to New Zealand for decent and consistent weather.

I find it really annoying that we got few days of sunshine so far.

Yup. The turbo trainer looks forward to a summer of peace and quiet, just idly chatting with other equipment in the garage. Not so this year my rocking friend! More TT time than you could shake a stick at...!

Pissed with rain for 5 minutes during my race this morning which didn't stop the main group from belting down the hill at 40.
Scared the crap out of me to be honest but with my mom and my teddy watching I couldn't really wimp out.I got round without a visit to A&E which is always a good thing.

Well, I've also moved to NZ, not sure about consistent weather, though July was very consistent - wet, wet and wet, one of my best investments before I left the UK was a pair of waterproof shorts, they've seen sterling service.
I'm in Auckland, when it's wet it's generally not cold, today's been the only decent w/end day I can remember for well over a month and I had a super ride, much much cooler but dry.

Me and the good lady were up till 1am discussing our next move! Its a choice between Oz or the g'friends home of California, visa permitting of course! (seeing as though we just spent 3 sun drenched weeks there it's looking good)

It's not just the weather though, big factor it is but there are many as to why we want to move - cost of living, crime, immigration, people's attitudes etc etc. But I am fed up to the back teeth of waking up everyday praying for dry weather never mind sunshine!!!

Celestcharlie - my dog completely agrees with you! It's going so bad that he's almost refusing to go out if it's raining!

    It's bloody terrible!!

I was able to stay mostly dry today, but yestarday was a complete washout which was annoying, as having done two races in the week, I was hoping to have a nice BBQ/booze up!!!

Oh well, at least i don't have a hangover!

  • I'm just looking forward to winter now. usually it's dry and nothing beats steeping out of the door on a crisp bright morning.

I HATE winter, I only cycle in the cold so I can be quick when it's summer, and then it rains in summer

It's not much worse than usual, people have short memories. Winter is wet and windy and summer is usually only a couple of weeks, the rest of the year is just plenty of showers, windy days and cool conditions.

It's not global warming anymore. It's 'climate change', which I think means that the catastrophic environmental damage we're all doing can be unarguably proved by the existence of 'weather'

That;s the thing though, it barely rains in winter. I don't think i've ever had to put of going out because of rain. Although there has been times i've been up on the Moors after it's been snowing and it's been effing cold.

The thing is, everyday for the last 8 days, it has RAINED. Some days it has just been light showers, but more than often it has been heavy rain showers, it ****ed up my weekend and it's going to make racing dangerous and not enjoyable.

Yeah, me too. i don't mind the cold or the rain too much if i'm wearing the right kit but having to pracically strip your bike down afterwards is just not fun but i can't stand to leave it dirty

  • Move to NZ if you like the wind because it is no understatement to say that it can be biblical here!! The temp is generally OK - overall warmer than the UK unless you live way down South (though they do have fantastic summers). We have just had a great summer but for the most part - at least in the part of the country I live - spring and summer are pretty consistently windy and that's not poncey UK wind that gusts for a couple of hours and gives up the ghost, it's day after day of relentless 40-60km wind - typically headwinds only :D . Autumn and winter tend to be less so but you never know what the weather may throw at you. It is a narrow country in the middle of the roaring forties with no major land masses nearby - waddya expect? There are many great things about the country but (for me at least) the weather is nowhere near as conducive to riding as back home.

Not that I want to put anyone off moving here because the cycling scene, weather notwithstanding, is pretty huge.

Getting fed up now. It's fairly cool today, but it was dry, so i set off. Get remotely near the Moors and it rains. I head home, deflated some what. an hours ride/22 miles. Not the distances I was expecting to be getting in this time of year.

I think I might take up an indoor sport like heavy drinking (with The Jan)

Good stuff IainF, made me chuckle!

I think the Great British weather's not bad at all; rain I don't mind, cold's not a problem with the right kit, wind can be a challenge but that just makes the post ride beer/pizza/whatever all the more deserved and satisfying, and when a nice sunny day with a gentle breeze comes along I appreciate it all the more. And if it's really sh**ty I'll just go for a run instead - solves the bike wahing problem! When I went to the south of France recently on the first day I thought it was great - not a cloud in the sky and temperature in the high twenties. After a week I was a bit sick of having to lather up with suncream three times a day, sweating profusely and constantly worrying about where my next bottle of water was coming from!

Sounds really hard. No numb fingers, no damp backside, no bike covered in crud. Instead you were getting a tan and having to plan a few café stops en route, I bet it's scarred you for life
