you know the kind of sound when your chain is just rattling against a derrailleur.

Im getting that kind of sound and thought my derraillure needed adjusted. strange thing is, you hear it very audibly when im riding over poor road surfaces , but when i ride over freshly tarmac`ed road ................it goes away :?:

so when i ride around the coast where some of the condition of the roads is dire, its clatterring away merrily and when i hit the smooth stuff..............silence.

im not technically minded at all, can any of you guys suggest what you think i should get done to fix it. bike is an 8 speed , double front ring trek 1000 with sora shifters.
cheers

Could be many things. I had something similar that turned out to be the inside of the seat post. Fixed by applying lots of grease to the post and inside of the frame.

  • Chain on Chainstays? If you have lots of oily marks on your frame, thats your problem...

FCN 3 or 4 on road depending on clothing
FCN 8 off road because I'm too old to go racing around.

Does it only make the noise when you're pedalling?

no, if i freewheel over rough road surface it does it too. silent if i freewheel on smooth.

Could be a number of things: Have your crashed the bike - the rear mech hanger could be bent and the chain rubbing the derailleur cage? The mech jockey wheels are so worn that the chain is skipping off and running against the cage. Examine your drivetrain carefully - lift the rear wheel and turn the pedals slowly and watch the chain as it runs over the cassette in different gear combos to try and spot the problems.

How about a nice simple case of rear brake cable rattling against the underside of the top tube, or gear cables rattling against the underside of the down tube. I fitted some 'o' rings to mine in both places and now have silence. :D

  • Do you wear a watch with a metal strap? Mine rattles when I go over rough surfaces?

    Hi there Jimmy!

I get this too! Mine I have found is a mixture of the chain being a little too slack (apparently you can have different tensions set up with different amounts of links) and the road surface making the chain bounce up and down onto the actual frame itself. Mine goes loverly and quiet too on even surfaces (like through the common here) :)

I just left mine tbh. Its too much hassle to shorten the chain as I think you have to change the rear sprocket to match. I actually changed my routes in and out of work too to avoid such a rattle and potential damage to the bike.
