Clipless cleat/pedal combo advice

Have been a keen roadie for about 18 months now, having been a devoted mountain biker for many years. Had already been riding a hybrid which I had upgraded for serious road use with better wheels etc, but decided to go the whole hog for the ultimate speed rush.
Was already using clipless Shimano pedals on the hybrid with my entry level (but very comfy) Shimano M038 shoes, and just transfered these across to the road bike. All been quite satisfactory so far, with over 2000 road miles behind me, but notice the weight in the feet and pedals on 50+ mile rides, and wonder whether road specific pedals and shoes will really make a noticeable difference in weight and performance/endurance?
