Does anyone know the make of a waterproof/windproof jacket under £50 that can be rolled up and carried in the rear pocket of a cycle jersey. I noticed alot of the TDF riders carrying see-through jackets in their rear pockets.

Many thanks

    I have one of these:

Good for when you don't think it's going to rain but you don't want to be without.

It's OK - keeps the wind and rain off for a good while and stuffs into a little sack about the size of an apple. Certainly no problem to stuff fit in a jersey pocket.

I have a Montane Featherlite too, the smock. Packs up tiny into a stuff sack. It's really for emergency downpours, I wouldn't bother for a shower if out in a bunch. I think it's rain-resistance has reduced a bit though with age, it seems to let a bit more through now than I remember. Only problem I have with it really is quite on the bellowing size, surrounds me like a balloon. Maybe one size too big but I reckon the arms would be too short otherwise. It is possible that the Velo jacket is cut better for cycling.

I have a Castelli one that is brilliantly compact - made of a parachute type material - that sells around the £50 mark.

Sportful, available from Geoff Butler (GB Cycles) also do a very similar offering at that price point.

Me too, excellent bit of kit.
  • I use the altura velocity which packs down pretty tight and is pretty good in all weathers.

I have a black Montane one. Tennisball sized and light to carry. Also packs down easily.

  • Another vote for Montane. I've got a Montane Velo. Easily fits in the jersey pocket. Waterproof, although not the warmest thing in the cold or heavy downpours.

Many thanks to you all. It seems that Montane wins the vote. I am surprised that there are not many other stowaway jackets out there for UK and winter riders.

There is the Rapha 'stowaway' but not at £50!

  • I've got a Specialized one that's good. Cost me about £25 in a sale as it was last years. Only problem is its black and there was no other choice. Very lightweight, windproof, and the fabric seems waterproof, although the seams aren't so its not described as waterproof.
