I've changed my whole drive over from a 52-39 chainset to a 48-34 setup with upgraded front and rear mech. I'm keeping my 13-29 cassette. My question is, can I keep the old chain or do I need a new one. Could I keep it and remove some links? My chain is an sram although I'm not sure which model. It's definitely not powerlink so I guess I'd have to remove it with a good old fashioned chain remover tool. ANy advice for this novice a great help!!

  • Depends on how many miles you have on the chain. if its quite new i'd just take some links out and reuse it. if its got more than 1000-1200 miles on it i'd probalby change it (i normally replace a chain every 2000 miles).

How old is your cassette? if its getting close to 4000 miles it probaby due for a change.

Cassette and chain are about 4yrs old. Both have prob done no more than 3000 miles. Will the chain not be too long for the compact chainrings?

I generally swap out cassette and chain at the same time as rings, just so they can all wear together.

the chain will be slightly long yes - you wil need to take a couple of links out as your "largest" combo of 52/29 is now just 48/29

set the chain on the big-bog combo and remove links unitl the rear mech is at 45degrees (ish)

also remember to lower your front mech when you put the new chainset on - the jump from 52 - 48 will put it too high to operate at it's best.
  • If you've got 3000 miles on your chain you should really replace it and unfortunately the cassette will alomost certainly have worn with it by now so if you want everything to run smoothly and change crisply that'll probably need changing as well.

It depends how picky you are - i like my bikes to run like clockwork but others don't seem to care so much
