As you can probably guess from my name i ride all-mountain.
What is the best fat (2.3-2.4) all around all mountain tyre? I'm considering conti mk pro's or the conti rubber queens. Scwable's nobbly nic, big betty and fat albert are also possibility's.

Many options - look at Panaracer Rampages, Kenda Nevegals and Maxxis Minions."Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0

Maxxis High Rollers or Kenda Nevegals at 2.35.'Happiness serves hardly any other purpose than to make unhappiness possible' Marcel Proust.0

I really like my 2.4 (more like 2.3, but hey) Conti Mountain King Protections (thats the one with the nice and sticky black chilli compound)
They grip just about anything. They arent the fastest, but great for a front wheel. Personally I would try something a bit faster on the back though.0 -
Mountain Kings a crap set of tyres, these came with my Orange 5 AM
and absolutely crap in the wet soil and no grip on wet roots.
Had a few bad offs in the really wet with these too.
Griped well in the dry but crap for punctures from thorns
Just bought a set of Fat Alberts and will be trying these Saturday
onlinebikes are selling these for £ 22.99p and these have the Snake Skin
sides. Chain Reaction are selling these for £ 32.00p
If I like these I will buy the Fat Albert Alpine Cross these are the same as
the above but a stronger tyre.
High Rollers are good but there is only tread on the centre and at the edges
of the trye and nothing inbetween so this does catch a few people out
if they ride tight single track at speed because you need to lean the bike into
corners to get grip. But a good tyre.
The Maxxis Minions are a Downhill tyre but nothing wrong in that.
If you do buy the Maxxis buy them in single ply to save weight
But if your ride is mainly rock/sharp edge stuff look at the dual ply.
And the combo then I would have a Tacky 42a Front and 60 back tyre.0 -
Allmountaineer - Conti MK Protection are perfectly fine tyres which for some reason Grantboy has decided to blame for his lack of ability :P
I've had my MKs for the last six months and found them extremely competent in all of the enviroments that the Peak District can offer. Mud, Peat, Rocks, Fireroads. They are even fast rolling on roads.
They are probably the best tyre I've purchased and I compare this against Maxxis Ignitors, ADvantage, Spesh Enduros, Panaracer Fire XC, Kenda Nevegals, all ridden on the same trails.
I suppose it depends on what riding you're doing, where you ride and how you ride? The MKs are a great all round trail tyre but there seems to be a great deal of love for Maxxis High Rollers and Kenda Nevegals.
Like may things tyres are often personal preference so its a case of trial and error until you find the right ones. I don't think you would be disappointed with MKs, HRs or Nevegals. In fact as the MKs size up a little smaller like Chrisps said you may want to opt for a chunky Nevegal 2.35 Stick-E front and DTC rear.\'Porridge is the weapon of choice\'

LOL ability more like Dont P i s s down my back and try and tell
me its raining !!! A little East End of London saying
Tested the Fat Alberts today in a mix terrain including clay soil and
off camber stucked to everything and gripped like hell and the speed
superb.
Just leave the conti crap or you can always have mine for free
but if you pick them up please do not return
If you have noticed the guy wants an All Mountain tyre, The Ignitor will
be crap just like the Contis.
If you going to continue to push a Conti at least point him to the Explorer
which is at least an All Mountain tyre.0 -
I'm familiar with the saying, its not just an East End thing Speaking of which, what sort of All Mountain riding do you do in the East End of London? Must be pretty knarly for the MKs not to flourish.
Never said the Ignitor was an All Mountain tyre, just a tyre that I've used over the years and have experience of therefore able to make a comparison with. I think the fact that the 5 comes with them as standard (a change from the Nevegals last year) and WMB tested the 2.2 version in the Lakes (lots of mountains) and thought highly of them speaks volumes.
Like I said, tyres are a personal thing and it depends on what riding you are doing/how you ride but I would not class the MKs as crap.\'Porridge is the weapon of choice\'

Cwn Carn/ Aston Hills / Leith Hill and Hard Xc and single track in Epping Forest
Yes the Conti comes with the 5 and many people who I ride with have ditched
them and I dont know many who still have them on the bike unless they have the
tubless set up and paid the extra notes for them.
The contis supplied on the 5 AM are only worth £ 13.00p appox from
Chain Reaction Just crap I run them at 35 psi Punctures no grip in the mud
well no grip on wet rocks or logs had three bad slide outs
No one can sell me these, I would rather walk home.
The Nevegals was on the Patriot and now have put High Rollers
on for 2009. The 5 had Kendas on them and was alot of complaints
regarding the Tractor tread and slow spead.
They should put the High Rollers on the 5AM has well I suppose Orange
did not want to two different type of tyres hanging round for the 5.0 -
They recommend not to run the Contis low. 50 psi I believe. Maybe thats were you were going wrong. In fact I recently got a pinch flat running them at 40 psi.
Ahh I now see.......

......I was referring to the Protection version with Black Chilli compound.
I just presumed that they put MK Pros on this years 5 and not these.....

Black Chilli makes all the difference. Honest.\'Porridge is the weapon of choice\'

Just put Maxxis High Rollers on my 456- the 2.35 versions. They do come up smaller than the Nevegal they replaced, but after 2 sidewall failures on the Kendas I dont think I'll be getting anymore (and I do rate them as a tyre!!) More like a large 2.1 [Maxxis] but the climbing grip off the rear tyre [reversed direction] is astounding, and while I could feel the differences initially and didn't like 'em... I think they are bob on for the money. I'll be getting some more once I ruin these in the Peak district!0
-
No probs Mik 75 but i think I will give them a big wide berth
Just that these Alberts are fab I was tearing down the single track
today, these are so fast and can run at 35 psi and they do these
in a Alpine Cross Albert whic has the protection in them.
Mik 75 Give them a go you wont look back and at £ 22.99p per tyre
from onlinebikes worth every penny.0 -
panaracer cinders do it for me, and at around £15-£20 each there a bargain for the levels of grip you get, but they wear out quicker than other tyres though. Or is it just the way i ride?0
