I'm walking down a footpath this afternoon to go and get some money (and make sure I've been paid - its the nhs after all ) and I see this big fella on his bike riding around an old dear.
RIGHT! Switched on the camera incase of aggro and was about to tell him off when I realised it was some kid delivering papers He was a big lad and had the bag pushed behind him.
Did make me think though, what age do you get on the roads? Couldnt imagine a 10 year old riding their bike around here tbh.

Does your camera rule you? If you see an incident would you help or just film what was going on?Old hippies don't die, they just lie low until the laughter stops and their time comes round again.

Yep, the camera does rule me. I've been a photographer since 5 years of age.0 -
Good question DF.
Hmmm, being a parent this is one i have thought about many times before now. Personally i don't think age should necessarily (sp?) be the determining factor - if you are taking your kids for a Sunday afternoon ride round then i guess after they've reached a point where they're confident / competent enough to ride supervised in traffic.
The paper boy i would personally give a little leeway too, same as the postie. (though i guess someone will now come along and tell me i shouldn't)
Kids playing out that happen to be on their bikes, well as far as i am concerned this is a tough one that i don't have an answer for. Certainly, by mid teens they are old enough i would have thought. But that's providing they have the necessary knowledge & skills to not get run over by some loony tune in a BMW...0 -
I did my cycle prof at age 13 I seem to remember... I think I began using the roads seriously by about 14 after commuting to work experience. Having had over 16 years on the roads I think traffic is different, it just made me wonder if this should be reflected.
Saw a postie riding a bike on a pavement today too actually. He had little choice though as they're digging the roads up on Shirley Rd where it happened.0 -
yes me too, i was about 11 or 12 as i recall and it was only after passing that the school allowed us to cycle in. but as you rightly say say it's all very different now.
Anyone care to pass judgement on modern in-school cycle training ? (indeed, is there such a thing nowadays ?)0 -
I got into cycling around the age of 13 and was using the roads regularly from then. If a kid is taught how to ride properly on the road and be aware of potential dangers (knowledge any parent who rides a bike should be able to pass on) I don't think there is a problem. Of course many kids will just be given a bike and that's it, so the reality may be a little different.0

Did he wave at you??
If not, you should have kicked him in the face.0 -
