Nokia sports tracker issue

The last couple of times I've tried to use Nokia Sportstracker, I've had problems.
It finds GPS signal no problem when i start off but after 5 to 15 miles, things start going wrong. The first sign is when i stop, the auto pause function doesn't kick in. Then i notice clock continues to run and the GPS signal indicator is green, but the route mapping, speed and altitude functions stop recording data. Although it looks like the GPS signal is being picked up, I'm not sure it is and think this might be the problem.
Has anyone else experienced similar? Any GPS experts have any recommendations?
I'm not sure if it's important but the first time this happened was when i tried to use it in France, but the problem has persisted back in the UK.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks,
D.

Reinstall the app? Also, check on the maps app that the GPS signal really is being picked up properly.0

I had several trips with the time running but everything else stopping recording after about a mile (despite GPS indicator being green). The solution was to set the access point to "none". I had it set to my home wireless network for uploading workouts to the web, I reckon it keeps looking for the access point and freezes when it can't find it. Since realising this and sorting it I have had 100% reliable workout data (as long as I remember to revert access point to none after uploading).
I imagine the same problem could happen if the access point is set to the mobile phone network, as the signal is likely to drop from time to time.
Have a go and let me know if this fixed it for you.0 -
Great, thanks, sounds like that might be it.
I'll try it and let you know.

alfablue,
I changed access point to 'none' before today's ride and everything worked fine for the entire ride. Thanks for your advice.

Hey, pleased to hear it! I really like this phone/software!0
-
I suffered from the same as above, fixed now.
Unfortunately I've now got another problem. Since installing I've never managed to pair with the service. Creating accounts fails, as does logging onto my current account. I've installed to a memory card and tried to pair using both 3.5g and my wifi connection, both fail.
It's a shame, I'm having to use the export option at the mo and import later, losing lots of data.0 -
It's only worked for me a couple of times. The main issue is that it gets 0/X satellites - X can be up to 12 depending on location. It managed to pick up a signal once in the city centre and maybe twice about 30 miles out of town.
Worked fine in Spain and it was only picking up about 4 satellites then.
Any thoughts? I've reinstalled the app and have the latest OS on my phone.________________________________

Jeez, mine just works fine all the time, never even looked at how many satellites. Does it run Nokia Maps okay? (If so that would suggest GPS function is fine). What phone is it? There was an issue with GPS performance on earlier N95 firmwares, but you say you have the latest update, so can't be that. Is Assisted GPS enabled on your phone? (Uses cell data connection to improve reception, however it should still work fine without, just takes longer for a fix). In Tools, Settings, General, Positioning, Positioning Methods I have ticks beside Assisted GPS, Integrated GPS and Network Based. There is no tick by Bluetooth GPS (as that would be for an external GPS), do you have the same settings?0 -
Excepting the above issues, how is everyone getting on with their Nokias?
My phone contract is finishing this month, and the Nokia, with its GPS and Sportstracker software looks very interesting. I've done a bit of research, and the main issues seem to be battery life and GPS reception. My friend told me that his N95 picks up the GPS signal better when it is slid open. For this reason, I was wondering if an N82 or similar candybar design would work better.
I train or race 10-12 hours per week, so I'm after something that will allow me to record training data. I've got a few bikes (race, winter, crosser, time trial), so the idea of just having one phone that I can fit onto whatever I'm riding seems better than having a speed monitor and mounting on each bike, as I do at the moment.0 -
I think the N82 is better, it is a more robust design, and the GPS receiver is apparently at the top of the phone rather than the base (hence the advice to open the N95 slider). Battery life is around 4 or 5 hours using the GPS, longer if the backlight is set to auto rather than always on. For me, since resolvong the access point issue, it has worked like a dream. It works fine in jersey back pocket or waterproof jacket pocket and in the map pocket on my bar bag. I have considered getting a Boxit waterproof case and handlebar mount (about £17 and £8 for the bar mount), but then if I have the backlight off there is no need to have it bar mounted.
The N82 also has a lens cover and a Xenon flash for the camera.
On tour it is great to be able to take photos which are then location tagged and also upload with the workout to the web service.0 -

I have the N95 8GB and it has the same GPS settings as you. Nokia Maps works perfectly, however ever since I updated the OS to the latest version Google Maps now tells me that I'm about a mile from where I actually am. This is a bit weird because surely both programs use the same GPS transmitter?________________________________

That is weird. How about GPS filtering, it can be set at high, medium or low, I gather high improves accuracy0

Sorry if this is turning into a phone/GPS tech discussion, but it is vaguely bike related
Just checked my phone:
Nokia Maps placed me directly at work.
Google Maps placed me about 8 streets over from where I am
SportsTracker has not found my position, citing Satellites: 0/11 which I presume means it failed to connect to a choice of 11 Satellites?
This seems weird because GBP is obv working ok. I've mailed the Nokia Development team responsible for SportsTracker but not had any response and I'd really like to get this fixed cos it is a pretty cool application.
Any ideas?________________________________

When you say Sportstracker hasn't found your position, is the GPS indicator green or yellow. I know you know this, but Sportstracker doesn't currently show a map position.0

The GPS indicator is yellow. The couple of times it found my position, a little blue indicator appeared on the screen straight away.
GPS filter is set to high.________________________________

Other than the SportsTracker issue, I have no problems with the N95. I've had it for about 8 months now and the battery life is fine, no probs with camera not having a lens cover or anything like that.
I've been out with it in my jersey pocket and caught in a sudden downpour and it's been fine.
No idea how it compares to any other N models. Nokia Maps and Google Maps GPS facility work fine for me regardless if the slider is open, but the times that Sportstracker has worked I needed to have the slider open.

Ah, I'm stumped then!
Try reinstalling? (I think you need to reset the phone and format the memory card to remove all vestiges of the previous installation - I realise you may not wish to take this step).0 -

No worries. Thanks for your input. Yeah, I've been thinking I may have to reformat which is a total bummer. If I decide to go dwn this route, and if it works, I'll let you know.________________________________

Not sure if this will help but on one a couple of wide screen laptops Google maps when it draws the route is consistently out to the east. Ie the route it draws is never on the selected road on the map. If I generate the same route on a std width screen it is fine. My point is that it may be google maps that is the issue not your GPS0 -

I had this exact problem.
To work around it, I scroll down to one of the other non map screens while tracking the route. It keeps recording OK then.
This is on a 6220 classic btw.
Anyone know of a decent mobile handlebar mount like the one on the N82 in the cycling plus review of nokia maps?0 -

This solution also fixed the problem I had, but the proper fix was to ensure that the access point was set to none. Is your access point set to something else?
As for a mount, I really like the look of the Boxit. It is fully waterproof. It comes in small or tall versions for different sized phones, and is around £18 at chainreactioncycles. The handlebar mount to go with it is £7.99.0 -

I found that I couldn't pair with the service when I was logged in to the website. OnceI had logged out it worked fine.0 -

To those having issues with the Sportstracker software stopping after a few miles. There is a solution on the Nokia Forums which I have tried and it works brilliant for me. The problem seems to be when you have the map on the screen. When the point reaches the edge of the map then the software stops recording (don't know why). When you start recording scroll down so that the map function is not shown on the screen then the software works fine. After 3 weeks of trying to get it to work I have successfully recorded my last two rides without issue, both over two hours long.
I can't comment on the accuracy as I don't have any comparable data, but it seems ok to me.0 -
Oh good tip on the map thing ! Will try that. There is a new update on maps too - make sure you get that - maps is far better now and quicker.0

I run a N73 with the LD-3W and suffer no probs whatsoever (apart from having to run version 1.64).Powered by Haribo.0

No update for Sports Tracker itself though. Do you get the feeling Nokia have gone a bit quiet on ST? 5 months for a beta with no update is the wilderness, especially when major features - in-line maps, particularly - are missing.0 -
