Hi,
Im quite new to MTBing and im just wondering what dfferent headsets do? I have been looking around but know where gives a decent description of what the difference is, especially as you can pay hundreds of £'s for them.

Thanks in advance,

Liam

They all do pretty much the same job, allowing you to steer ;)

the top end ones like chris kings, hopes and expensive cane creeks have better seals to keep out mud and grit, and should last for a very long time.

you also get integrated headsets where the bearings sit directly into specially machined seats in the headtube. These are only for bikes that have been designed to use them, and as far as I know you can't use a trad headset in a bike designed for an integrated headset.

mud & grit will form a very good grinding paste with the grease in the headset, thus wearing it out a lot quicker.

That headset cover is a good idea (I use one) it helps stop crap getting in your headset.

yeah, what Andy_b said, but remember to take it off when you clean your bike, as dirt can works its way underneath the cover sometimes.
